FGS notice: PASS/ILL grading options for graduate students

Posted by Faculty of Graduate Studies on December 3, 2020 in News

Below you will find instruction on your options for converting grades to PASS/ILL in the 2020-2021 Fall and Winter terms. Graduate students may opt to take a PASS/ILL grade in certain courses ONCE ALL THEIR FINAL GRADES HAVE BEEN RECEIVED AND POSTED TO DAL ONLINE.

Courses/degree activities which are NOT eligible for the Pass/ILL grading option

  • Thesis Defense Results
  • Comprehensive and Qualifying Exam Results
  • Internship, Clinical Placement, and Residency format courses

Courses eligible for the Pass/ILL grading option

  • All other graduate or undergraduate courses taken by a graduate student, irrespective of their program of study or the faculty in which the course resides.

What this means:

  • Minimum letter grade required to transition to a PASS is normally B- for graduate students.
  • Your original letter grade will not appear on your official transcript. If you ever need to revert a PASS to the original letter grade, you can do so by applying for a Waiver of Academic Regulation and requesting that your grade be reverted to the original grade.
  • A grade of F in an eligible course can be transitioned to ILL.  You will need to re-take the course if required as part of your degree completion.  Please speak with an advisor in your program to determine how this will affect your degree plan moving forward.

How to change your grade to PASS/ILL:
This process is expected to be available through Dal Online beginning on Friday, December 4th. Requests for PASS/ILL waivers for the Fall term must be received by February 1, 2021. No waivers will be processed between December 24 and January 4, while the University is closed.

  • Submit the waiver form to change your grade(s) to PASS/ILL after ALL your final grades have been posted.
  • To access the waiver form, log in to your Dal Online account and choose Student Records > Academic Record. Click on the link at the top of the page and complete the required information in the waiver application.
  • Be sure to select Graduate Studies as your faculty.
  • Once you submit your waiver, an academic advisor from your program may reach out to you via your dal.ca email to discuss your options.
