Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Membership Applications

All submissions should be sent to fgs.memberships@dal.ca.

It is the academic unit’s responsibility to notify FGS when individuals with FGS membership (Regular, Cross-listed, Adjunct) are no longer involved with the graduate program or students.

Retired Dalhousie faculty members, who held full-time academic appointments and Regular Membership in FGS immediately before their retirement may, with a paid post-retirement appointment, continue as a Regular member without change in privileges for the duration of their post-retirement appointment.

The Chair/Director/Head should submit a copy of the post-retirement appointment letter signed by the President to fgs.memberships@dal.ca addressed to the Dean of FGS.

Note for retired Dalhousie faculty members who do not hold a paid post-retirement appointment: Please apply for adjunct membership (see below). Emeritus Professors should be aware that the title is honorific. Those wishing to work with graduate students must apply for FGS membership.

Cross-Listing

Cross-listing is required for Regular FGS members, who wish to supervise or co-supervise graduate students in another academic unit. Regular FGS members may serve on supervisory and/or examination committees in other units without a cross-listing. No letter of approval or confirmation is sent from FGS for cross-listings.

To recommend a Regular FGS member from another unit for cross-listing, the unit should submit an email to fgs.memberships@dal.ca with the following information:

  1. The academic unit requesting the cross-listing

Adjunct Members

Please see the Guidelines for Categories of Adjunct Appointments through FGS for more information.

Note: Adjunct (Retired) members wishing to supervise/co-supervise graduate students and Adjunct (FGS) members wishing to co-supervise graduate students in another academic unit must seek an adjunct appointment through that unit. Adjunct (Retired) and Adjunct (FGS) members may serve on supervisory and/or examination committees in another unit without an additional adjunct appointment.

Adjunct (Retired)

Adjunct (Retired) Membership is for retired Dalhousie faculty members, who held full-time academic appointments and Regular Membership in FGS immediately before their retirement, but who do not hold a paid post-retirement appointment (see above). Adjunct (Retired) members have the full privileges of Regular Membership, including the option to solely supervise graduate students.

To recommend an individual for Adjunct (Retired) Membership, the Chair/Director/Head should submit the following to fgs.memberships@dal.ca addressed to the Dean of FGS:

  1. The signed Adjunct (Retired) application form

Adjunct (FGS)

Adjunct (FGS) Membership is for non-Dalhousie scholars who wish to have extended involvement with Dalhousie University graduate programs. Adjunct (FGS) members may co-supervise one or more graduate students, serve on supervisory and examination committees and teach one or more graduate courses. An Adjunct (FGS) member may not be the sole supervisor of a graduate student.

To recommend an individual, with appropriate academic qualifications for Adjunct (FGS) Membership, the Chair/Director/Head should submit the following to fgs.memberships@dal.ca addressed to the Dean of FGS:

  1. The applicant’s CV, including scholarly activity, any previous experience with graduate  students
  2. The signed Adjunct (FGS) application form

Adjunct (Scholar)

Adjunct (Scholar) Membership is typically for non-Dalhousie scholars with more limited involvement (i.e. one student or one course only) with Dalhousie University graduate programs. Adjunct (Scholar) members may co-supervise a Master’s student, or serve on a supervisory or examining committee of a single graduate student or teach one course.  An Adjunct (Scholar) member cannot be the sole supervisor of a graduate student.

To recommend an individual, with appropriate academic qualifications for Adjunct (Scholar) Membership, the Chair/Director/Head should submit the following to fgs.memberships@dal.ca addressed to the Dean of FGS:

  1. The applicant’s CV, including scholarly activity, any previous experience with graduate students
  2. The signed Adjunct (Scholar) application form

Note: members in this adjunct category will not be listed in the graduate calendar.

Adjunct (Scholar) Status for Dalhousie Postdoctoral Researchers

Adjunct (Scholar) Membership for Dalhousie Postdoctoral Researchers is intended to broaden the training experience for postdoctoral level researchers, but with the expectation that postdocs will not be unduly burdened with graduate student responsibilities. Adjunct (Scholar) members in this category may co-supervise Master’s students, serve on supervisory and examining committees (except those of their immediate supervisor) and teach graduate courses. An Adjunct (Scholar) Postdoctoral member cannot supervise or co-supervise PhD students and only one Adjunct (Scholar) Postdoctoral member may serve on a given Master’s or PhD supervisory or examining committee.

To recommend an individual, with appropriate academic qualifications for Adjunct (Scholar) Postdoctoral membership, the Chair/Director/Head should submit the following to fgs.memberships@dal.ca addressed to the Dean of FGS:

  1. The applicant’s CV
  2. The signed Adjunct (Scholar) Postdoctoral application form

Note: members in this adjunct category will not be listed in the graduate calendar.
