What We Do

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is primarily an administrative unit. We facilitate and provide assistance with the following services:

  • Admissions
    • process and review applications
    • provide advice to potential applicants
  • Program Changes
    • facilitate changes between graduate programs
  • Scholarships
    • organize scholarship competitions for Tri-Council awards, Killams, and more
    • facilitate funding dispersements to award recipients
  • Bursaries
    • distribute bursaries for students with financial need
  • Research and Travel Grants
    • distribute grants for students doing research (who are not eligible for other funding) and for students travelling to present their research at academic conferences
  • Thesis Submissions
    • facilitate thesis format checking and submission for all graduate students
  • PhD Defences
    • organize defences for PhD students
  • Killam Programs
    • organize the annual competition for Killam scholarships, as well as the annual Killam Celebration event
  • Convocation
    • approve the list of graduates
    • marshal graduate students at convocation ceremonies
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships
    • administer to needs of Dalhousie Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Professional Development
    • organize professional development opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in collaboration with other departments
  • Interdisciplinary PhD Program (IDPhD)
    • oversee and administer the IDPhD program
