Dr. Alan S. Fung, PEng, FCSME, is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Ryerson University and an Adjunct Professor (Mechanical Engineering) at Dalhousie University. He is also the faculty adviser of Ryerson ASHRAE Student Chapter. Dr. Fung is a registered Professional Engineer in the provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Dalhousie University. He co-founded and was the manager of the Canadian Residential Energy End-Use Data and Analysis Centre (CREEDAC) at Dalhousie from 1995 to 2005. Dr. Fung has more than 15 years of experience in energy research and oversees a vigorous research program on sustainable building integrated energy systems/net-zero energy buildings. He co/authored over 180 journal/conference publications, book chapters, technical reports and workshop presentations and trained more than 100 HQPs. He has been involved in the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)-Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) Archetype Sustainable House project for the Ryerson-TRCA research partnership, of which he is the initiator and project leader, in R&D on sustainable energy and community development. Dr. Fung was also a key member of the Ampas-Ryerson SUI CMHC EQuilibrium Housing competition winning entry and Ryerson’s engineering faculty coordinator for Team North, the US DOE 2009 Solar Decathlon competition team, which was ranked 4th overall among 20 international finalists. Among the many committees Dr. Fung serves on, the most notable are the Technology Transfer Committee (co-Chair) of the NSERC Smart Net-zero Energy Buildings Research Network (SNEBRN) dedicated to achieving cost-effective net-zero energy buildings in Canada and the International Building Performance Simulation Association of Canada (IBPSA-Canada) (Treasurer) which aims to promote building simulation education and research in Canada for sustainable building design. In addition, he is an external reviewer for various scientific journals, conferences, and research funding agencies and works closely with government agencies and industries in providing expert opinion on various energy and emission related subjects that have regional/national/international interest. Dr. Fung was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal, CMHC 2009 Excellence in Education Award for the promotion of sustainable practice and Ryerson FEAS 2009 Research Excellence Award. He was also named an “Earth Angel” by the Toronto Star in recognition of his involvement in many sustainable housing projects.
