Women in Tech Day will take place on Friday November 24th 2017, and will run from the morning into the early afternoon at the Dalhousie Halifax campus (Directions to Dalhousie). Detailed schedule information is listed below.

This free event is designed to introduce high school students, identifying as female, to the opportunities available in technology. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about Dalhousie's Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, and experience interactive sessions where you will see how technology is transforming the world. The day includes free lunch for all attendees.

Attend interactive sessions in:

Session 1: Augmented Reality and The Psychogeographer's Table
Experience an Augmented Reality exhibit that reflects on the 100th anniversary of the Halifax explosion.  Participants will get to try out Microsoft Hololens Augmented Reality glasses and explore parts of the exhibit that includes a wooden relief map of the harbour.  This session is held in the Dalhousie Art Gallery. 

Session 2: CyberSecurity and Games
Are you curious about network security? What it means? How it works and how it protects you? In this session, we will show you some of the popular attacks such as domain name spoofing as they happen on the Internet. We will also show you how to analyze them. Join us to see the CSI Dalhousie team work to search for Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence solutions.

Session 3: Smartphones and Emerging Wireless Technologies
Dr. Srini Sampalli and his students welcome you to their Emerging Wireless Technologies Lab. See the new trends in smartphones, near field communications and augmented reality. Discover applications in location tracking, healthcare, and gaming with just a tap of your smartphone.

Session 4: Create Your Own App
In this hands-on session, you will learn how to create your own mobile app.  You will come out of this session seeing how fun and simple it is to create an app.  

Session 5: Technology in Healthcare
Are you passionate about helping people using technology? Are you curious about how popular technologies such as games, social media, and mobile applications can be used to shape the world and make it a better place? Join the HCI group in this session to explore how interactive systems can be designed to promote health and wellness and support our healthcare systems. You will participate in developing prototype applications for tackling known health and wellness issues.

Session 6: Design Thinking and Tech Start-ups
Are you interested in combining different fields of study – maybe blending computer science with a passion for another discipline? Do you love the idea of taking creative approaches to solving problems? Join ShiftKey Labs for an interactive design thinking activity as it relates to tech innovation. Learn how to innovate through design thinking that involves brainstorming, idea generation, storyboarding and finding inspiration for new ideas outside the classroom. 

 

There is no cost to attend this event, but registration is required.
