Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Training

A Yellow Belt is a person versed in the basics of the Lean Six Sigma Methodology who participates in improvement projects as a part of a team led by a Green Belt or Black Belt. They represent stakeholder groups’ interests to the project, and keep stakeholder groups informed and engaged. They are subject matter experts with respect to at least part of the business process being improved. As such, they guide the project leader to ask the right questions and help access existing data or collect new data that can answer those questions. They assist the project leader to discover meaningful interpretations of data, and are instrumental in designing and implementing practical solutions that will be accepted by stakeholders.

Yellow Belts help projects to proceed efficiently, effectively, and to gain and maintain stakeholder support. They add significant value to any improvement effort!

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for those who expect to participate in Lean or Six Sigma projects as Project Sponsors, Process Owners, or Project Team Members. They will be prepared make effective contributions to projects immediately after completing the workshop. It is also ideal for anyone who would like an in-depth introduction to the concepts and tools of Lean Six Sigma.

Course Content

The Bodies of Knowledge maintained by the American Society for Quality and the International Association of Six Sigma Certification are widely regarded as industry standards. Dalhousie’s Yellow Belt course is aligned with them.

I. Lean Six Sigma Fundamentals

  • DMAIC and Project Management Approach
  • Team Decision-Making Tools
  • Quality Tools and Metrics (Pareto Charts, Fishbone Diagrams, Process Maps, Flowcharts, Run Charts, Check Sheets, Scatter Diagrams, Spaghetti Diagrams, Defects Per Unit, Defects Per Million Opportunities, Rolled Throughput Yield, Cycle Time, and Cost Of Poor Quality)

II. Define Phase

  • Project identification (Voice of the customer, Critical-to-Quality/Cost/Speed, Project selection, Stakeholder analysis, and SIPOC)
  • Project Charters

III. Measure Phase

  • Basic statistics
  • Data Collection (Types of data, operational definitions, data sources, collection methods, and timing)
  • Measurement System Analysis
  • Basic Data Distributions
  • Common Cause vs. Special Cause Variation
  • Sigma Levels

IV. Analyze Phase

  • Process analysis Tools (Value analysis, 5-whys, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis)
  • Correlation, Causality, and Regression
  • Hypothesis Testing

V. Improve Phase

  • Improvement Techniques (Process Principles, Kaizen (WorkOut), Standard Procedures, Job Aids, Policies and Standards, Kanban, Supermarkets, Flexible Workforce, Work Leveling, Workplace Layout, and 5-S)
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis Principles

VI. Control Phase

  • Control plans
  • Poka Yoke

Program Certificate

Upon completion of the classroom session, participants will be awarded with a Dalhousie University Certificate acknowledging their Yellow Belt-level knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodology tools and techniques.

Program Delivery Format

a.    Pre-Workshop Reading Assignment

Learners will be emailed a pdf article describing the background of Lean Six Sigma, and are asked to read it prior to the workshop. The workshop will begin with a small-team exercise that draws on the material.

b.    2 days of Classroom-Based Learning

Learners will participate in an interactive workshop delivered in accordance with the principles of Adult Education. Teaching methods will include presentations, hands-on experimentation with many Lean Six Sigma tools, and lively discussion!
