FAQs

What are the requirements for admission into the Certificate in Police Leadership program?

There are no minimum academic requirements, however experience in law enforcement is necessary. Many of the assignments will ask you to reflect upon past experiences in applying the theory or will have you apply the theory to current situations, so a minimum of two years experience is recommended.

When can I start?

Most of the courses in the Certificate in Police Leadership program run according to three study terms: fall, winter and spring. The fall term starts in September, the winter term in January, and the spring term in April. The exception to this schedule is the Advanced Police Leadership course which has flexible start dates due to the independent study project. Please note that not all courses are offered in each term.

How do I register?

Complete the online registration form for the course(s) you wish to register for. There will be details at the top of every course page.

Can these courses be applied towards a university degree?

Yes, our courses can also be applied to Wilfred Laurier’s Bachelor of Policing and the Advanced Police Leadership course is a credit towards the Master of Public Safety. Why not earn several certificates from Dalhousie as you work your way closer to a degree? You will acquire impressive credentials along your learning journey as you study with peers from law enforcement across the country. Transfer credits available can be found in our articulation agreement.

Our courses may also be applied towards Athabasca University’s Bachelor of Professional Arts in Criminal Justice. See the section on "Transfer Credits" for more information.

Other institutions may also accept the courses as credit on a case by case basis.

How long will it take me to get a certificate?

Each course (with the exception of the Advanced Police Leadership course) are approximately 12 weeks long. To get your first certificate in a concentration you need three courses. If you were to take a course each term you would receive your first certificate in one year. Each subsequent ‘concentration’ certificate could be received in less than a year if you were to take a course each term. Taking more than one course per term is not recommended.

It would take a minimum of 2.5 years to finish an Advanced Certificate in Police Leadership.
