Occupational Hygiene for Managers

Description

The profession of Occupational Hygiene addresses the prevention and minimizing of workplace injury and disease based on extensive knowledge of the potential for workplace injuries and disease and an understanding of the physiological basis of damage (immediate, short and long term) to the human body. This course will place significant emphasis on the manager's ability to understand and consider the hygiene strategies in approaching potential workplace hazards. In discussing the physiological basis of potential harm to the worker(s), exposure routes will be identified and controls recommended preventing or minimizing harm from such hazards. Adequate exhaust ventilation and other controls will be discussed for particularly harmful airborne materials, as well as other engineering and administrative controls in a variety of work situations. Finally, personal protective equipment will be reviewed for use when other controls cannot sufficiently remove the hazard or when controls fail (emergency situations). In addition to the protection of workers from workplace hazards the course will include discussions on awareness of ergonomic issues, stress minimization and promotion of healthy and safe work environments.

Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) Approved Program

This is a required course in the Occupational Health & Safety Management program and an elective course in the Certificate in Environmental Management program.

Objective

The main objective of this course is to educate managers in methods of recognizing and minimizing the potential for exposures, that is, prevention rather than reactive measures. This course will provide attendees with an overview of occupational hygiene and its role in workplace health and safety. Safety controls, including elimination/substitution, engineering and administrative controls for a variety of potential and specific hazards will be discussed, as well as the use and limitations of personal protective equipment at work and in emergency response.

This course will benefit those with OH&S and Environmental responsibilities, HR professionals, engineers, labour representatives, nurses, safety specialists, workers' compensation personnel.

Format

Day 1 - registration/check-in will start at 8:00 a.m. with sessions to begin at 8:30 a.m. and adjourn at 4:00 p.m. Days 2-4 will commence at 8:30 a.m. and adjourn at 4:00 p.m. There will be a 15 minute mid-morning and afternoon coffee break. A light lunch is included.

Instructor

Jim P. LeBlanc is the senior Occupational Hygiene instructor with Safety P.A.T.H. OHS Education and Consulting. He has been in the fields of occupational health and occupational safety since 1979, both, as a private consultant and as a senior regulator with the Province of Nova Scotia.

During his 30+ years of employment with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour Jim held the positions of Executive Director of the OHS Division; Director of Occupational Health; Director of Safety Training; and Occupational Hygienist.  Jim also worked in the private sector as a senior Occupational Hygiene consultant. He is a highly knowledgeable instructor with experience teaching at Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University.  Jim has a very extensive list of professional memberships and activities.
