July 16 - Aug. 10, 2018

Registration Closed for Summer 2018.

Learn English by Living in English

Dalhousie University’s Summer English in Canada Program combines English classes with a module entitled Chronic Condition Management, offered through the School of Occupational Therapy and the Faculty of Health, Dalhousie University. This course is not a Dalhousie credit course, but you will receive a certificate upon successful completion, which you may present to your university or employer. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice English skills in the community of Halifax, and participate in evening and weekend activities.

Chronic Condition Management Module

In this course, students will explore chronic diseases that are impacting the growing cost of healthcare in most developed countries. Students will explore chronic conditions and how new approaches are being used to promote healthy living, working and aging with chronic disease. Issues that will be explored include inter-professional approaches to practice and care; emerging models of chronic care; practice-based approaches; tools and intervention strategies and self-management. Cases will be used to explore differences and similarities in how persons with chronic conditions access health services, health professionals and programs.

Please note: It is recommended that students who enroll in this course have already achieved an intermediate level in English (IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL iBT 61)

The Schedule

Mornings consist of intensive reading, writing, speaking and listening classes - from 9:00-12:30.

In the afternoons, when you are not in the Chronic Condition Management class, the Interacting with the English Language workshops allow you to use the language you’ve learned in real-life situations in the community - from 1:30-4:00.

On weekends, visit the beautiful parks, beaches, lakes and historic sites the province of Nova Scotia is famous for. Halifax is Canada’s friendliest city and it comes alive in summer with festivals and events. There’s time for shopping and nightlife, too!

Safe and Convenient Housing

You will stay right on campus in one of the university residences. English-speaking Canadian language assistants live with you in residence for conversation practice and to provide you with information and organize activities. You will have the opportunity to speak English every day in class, around the city, and at home in residence.
