Bachynski, John, E., B.Sc. P.Eng

John E. Bachynski, B.Sc. P.Eng., is Principal of EPM Consulting located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has over 30 years experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering, specializing in plant air quality, dust collection, transport, storage and dust explosion prevention. Since graduating from TUNS (B.Eng., Mechanical) in 1980 he has worked continuously in the testing, design, installation and commissioning of industrial dust collection and explosion prevention systems. His project experience includes dust and fume collection systems, dilute and dense phase pneumatic conveying systems in the rubber, cement, coal, steel, grain, foundry, salt, machining, wood pellets, pulp, paper and wood handling facilities. He continues his growing client base in Canada, United States, Mexico and Europe specializing in upgrading plants to prevent dust explosions and also designing, commissioning and testing for new facilities. Mr. Bachynski has published articles on dust related topics for Bulk and Powder magazine, been a technical presenter for the dust related topics for Powder and Bulk, Dalhousie University, College of Continuing Education, NFPA International Technology Conference and private industry. He was nominated for a Canadian design award 1982, and received the Nova Scotia Award for Energy Conservation, Large Industry Sector, 1988 for the installation of a 40TPD wood dust burning boiler.

Bartlett, Sean, P. Eng.

Sean Bartlett is a Project Manager at RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in Fredericton, New Brunswick.  Sean is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.  Sean graduated as a mechanical engineer in 2006 from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in fire protection engineering at the University of Maryland.

Sean is an active committee member with the Fredericton Branch of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick.

Sean provides fire protection consulting and design services on all types of occupancies.

Battikha, N.E. (Bill), P.Eng.

N.E. (Bill) Battikha, P.Eng., is a registered Professional Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the field of Process Instrumentation and Control, working mainly in Canada and the USA . He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He generated and conducted Instrumentation and Control training courses for over 10 years at many universities and at the ISA.

Bill co-authored a patent and has written three books on Instrumentation and Controls, all published by the ISA, with the last book being an ISA best-seller. Bill is also a member of many ISA committees generating new standards. He has presented papers at many international conferences and has written numerous articles for major technical magazines.

Bill's engineering activities cover the development of engineering standards and the generation of control philosophies and functional specifications. He designed complete control systems, guided and inspected the work of engineering consultants, monitored contractors on-site, and personally carried on plant commissioning and start-up. Bill assisted plants in resolving and troubleshooting difficult problems from conceptual engineering to maintenance. He also performed plant audits and assisted construction and maintenance personnel in resolving difficult technical issues. Bill implemented control systems using microcomputers, programmable controllers, DCSs, and analog instrumentation. Bill is the President of BergoTech Inc. - a firm specializing in on-line Engineering courses.

Bezanson, Kevin, P.Eng.

Kevin Bezanson, P.Eng., is the manager of the Structural Department at CBCL Limited. He is a graduate of TUNS and has worked in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He has a wide range of experience in the design of various structures including buildings, bridges, retaining structures, marine structures, material handling structures and off-shore structures. Through this work he has gained considerable experience designing in steel, concrete, masonry and timber. Mr. Bezanson has also been a part-time lecturer at Dalhousie University, Faculty of Engineering, for the undergraduate Steel Design Course, Special Topics Course and Construction Management Course.

Coles, Ben, M.Sc.E., MBA, P.Eng., PE, Fire Protection Engineer

Ben Coles Ben Coles is a Project Coordinator at RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Ben is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Maine. Ben graduated as a mechanical engineer in 2003 from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and has since completed his M.Sc.E. in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in 2009 and MBA in Engineering Management from UNB in 2011.

Ben has participated on a variety of committees with organizations such as the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick, and Association of Consulting Engineering Companies.

Ben provides fire protection consulting services on all types of occupancies.

Doncaster, Andrea, LEED AP, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.

Andrea Doncaster, LEED AP, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., is an Engineer in Residence, teaching part-time in the Civil Engineering Department at Dalhousie University, and principal of Andrea Doncaster Engineering. She is a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Nova Scotia, and has worked in structural consulting for 20 years, including 12 years at BMR Structural Engineering.  Her experience includes the design and analysis of buildings constructed of steel, concrete, masonry and timber. She holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Co-op degree and a Master of Applied Science degree from the Technical University of Nova Scotia, and is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional. Ms. Doncaster has been teaching for Continuing Technical Education at Dalhousie since 2001.

Doucette, Luc, PTech, NICET III

Luc Doucette is a certified engineering technologist. Luc graduated from the New Brunswick Community College (Moncton, NB) with a diploma in Civil Technology in 2004.  He joined RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in April of 2006.

Luc is registered with NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology) as a Level III Water-Based Systems Layout Professional.

Luc has participated in various projects with RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd including fire protection engineering with respect to schools and universities, nursing homes, office buildings, industrial facilities, and hotels. These projects include the construction of new buildings as well as renovations and additions to existing facilities. Luc currently holds the position of Project Manager with the fire protection systems team.

Jeffs, Paul

Paul Jeffs is an independent consultant who, for over 25 years, has specialized in providing technical advice and consulting services for the design, construction, restoration and protection of concrete and masonry structures - with particular emphasis on trouble-shooting. He has considerable experience with the investigation of concrete and masonry structures. Prior to forming PJ Materials Consultants Limited, he was employed for over 25 years within the construction industry around the world. Paul has served on the Canadian Standards Association Technical Committee (Associate) and the High Performance Sub-Committee for New Parking Structures (CAN/CSA S-413); he also served on the CSA 266 series of Admixture standards, and is a past director of the Concrete Restoration Association of Ontario. He served as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee to the Ontario Ministry of Housing for the deterioration and repair of existing parking structures, he was a member of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation technical advisory committee for the development of restoration standards and is a member of the National Research Council's Working Group on Repointing Mortars. He has provided materials related expertise as a consultant for numerous industries and has authored many technical papers.

Paul provides courses across Canada on such topics as durable concrete mix design and construction, concrete and masonry structure condition assessments, concrete repair and protection, the restoration of heritage and masonry structures and the design and construction of concrete slabs on grade. He has also regularly presented public and in-house courses in the Middle East. Paul has been a guest lecturer for several Canadian universities, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Canadian Dam Association, a speaker at many conferences and has authored or co-authored numerous technical articles.

Kiameh, Philip, M.A.Sc., B.Eng., D.Eng., P.Eng.

Philip Kiameh, M.A.Sc., B.Eng., D.Eng., P.Eng. (Canada) has been a teacher at the University of Toronto for over 22 years. During this period, he has taught courses and seminars to working engineers and professionals around the world. He has written five books for working engineers, three of which have been published by McGraw-Hill, New York.  

Power Generation Handbook: Gas Turbines, Steam Power Plants, Co-generation, and Combined Cycles, second edition; Electrical Equipment Handbook; Power Plant Equipment Operation and Maintenance Guide; Industrial Instrumentation and Modern Control Systems, University of Toronto Custom Publishing (1999); and Industrial Equipment, University of Toronto Custom Publishing (1999).

Philip has received numerous awards including “Excellence in Teaching Award” (May 1996) Professional Development Centre, University of Toronto; “Excellence in Teaching Award” (April 2007)  from TUV Academia, one of the largest Professional Development centers in the world based in Germany and the United Arab Emirates providing engineering training to engineers and managers across Europe and the Middle East.

Philip has performed research on power generation equipment with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited at their Chalk River and Whiteshell Nuclear Research Laboratories. He has more than 28 years of practical engineering experience with Ontario Power Generation (formerly, Ontario Hydro) where he has worked as Training Manager, Engineering Supervisor, System Responsible Engineer and Design Engineer. During this period, he was Manager of a section that provided training for the staff at the power stations. This training covered all the equipment and systems used in power stations. He was also responsible for the operation, maintenance, diagnostics, and testing of gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, motors, transformers, inverters, valves, pumps, compressors, instrumentation and control systems. Further, his responsibilities included designing, engineering, diagnosing equipment problems and recommending solutions to repair deficiencies and improve system performance, supervising engineers, setting up preventive maintenance programs, writing Operating and Design Manuals, and commissioning new equipment.   

Professor Philip Kiameh was awarded his Bachelor of Engineering Degree "with distinction" from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (1993). He also received a Master of Applied Science in Engineering (M.A.Sc.) from the University of Ottawa, Canada. He is also a member of the Association of Professional Engineers in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Kleywegt, Harold, P.Eng.

Harold Kleywegt, P.Eng., is principal and Managing Director of Keystone Bridge Management Corp. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo (BASc 1976) and the University of Guelph (MSc 1978). Harold has 35 years full-time experience in the management, rehabilitation design, maintenance, construction and inspection of both highway and railway bridges. He was instrumental in the development of the Ontario Bridge Management System and is actively helping manage 1500 municipal bridges in Ontario. He has given numerous presentations on bridge management practises, has been a guest lecturer at Queen's University, Kingston and he was a presenting author at The International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) conference in Seoul, Korea, July 2008.

MacDonald, Ian, P.Eng., CFEI

Ian MacDonald is the General Manager of RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Ian is a licensed Professional Engineer in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Ontario.  Ian graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) degree in 1985.  He joined RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in 1995 after working in Ontario as a fire protection consultant for ten years.

In addition to being a National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator, Ian has participated on a variety of committees with organizations such as FiRECAM Atlantic Working Group, Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick, Canadian Standards Association, Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada, National Research Council, and Association of Consulting Engineering Companies.

MacLeod, Kathryn L.

Kathryn Lynn MacLeod is a certified Lead Quality Auditor and is President of Anchor Professional & Training Services (APTS) Ltd. APTS is a full-service professional training and development practice servicing a diverse international client base. Kathy is an Associate with an internationally recognized Quality Registrar and acts in the capacity of ISO 9001:2000 trainer, lead assessor and market development. Kathy was instrumental in the management and development of Nova Scotia's Quality and Productivity Initiative (QPI). Her expertise lies in the areas of Quality Assurance Systems and Standards (CSA Z299/ISO 9000), Service Quality, Total Quality Management and Organizational Excellence, Productivity Improvement, Food Quality and Safety, Change Management and Organizational Cultures.

Kathy has provided hands-on advice and guidance to over 300 companies. As a certified Lead Assessor, she has assisted her clients in their achievement of registration to international standards of quality assurance and successful implementation of quality processes and philosophies. In addition to her work with ISO 9001, Kathy's management experience covers both the public and private sectors in quality and safety analysis, auditing, assessments, training, facilitation, quality and productivity studies and benchmarking.

A Certified Toastmaster, Kathy has taught public speaking and has given motivational speeches and presentations to groups and organizations on a wide variety of quality and quality related topics. She is also an instructor for Dalhousie University, College of Continuing Education, Continuing Technical Education, and is currently teaching an ISO 9001:2000 certificate program along with several other courses in quality and process improvement. Kathy is a recipient of the ASQ Harry James Quality Commitment Award.

Molloy, Sue, Ph.D., Ocean Engineering

Dr. Sue Molloy has a Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering and specializes in Marine Renewable Energy and environmental concerns when engineering in the marine environment. Sue has taught Introduction to Renewable Energy and Sustainability & Design at OCAD University and Sustainability & the Environment in the Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University. Sue is chair of the Engineering Council on Ocean Resources Specialist Panel on Marine Energy (www.oceanicresources.org) and co-chair of the Fundy Energy Research Network Engineering Challenges Subcommittee (fern.acadiau.ca). Sue consults in the Ocean Engineering field and teaches at local universities.

Murray, Adam, CET, NICET IV

Adam Murray is a certified engineering technologist. Adam graduated from the New Brunswick Community College (Moncton, NB) with a diploma in Civil Technology in 1999.  He joined RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd the same year.

Adam is an active member of various standards subcommittees for Underwriter’s Laboratories of Canada.

Adam has participated in various projects with RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd including fire protection engineering with respect to schools and universities, nursing homes, office buildings, industrial facilities, and hotels. He currently holds the position of Project Coordinator and leads the RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd fire protection systems team.

Oickle, Christian, M.E., P.Eng., Fire Protection Engineer

Christian Oickle is a licensed Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia as well as Newfoundland and Labrador.  Christian graduated from the Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical) degree in 2006, and has subsequently earned a Master of Fire Protection Engineering in 2013 through the University of Maryland.  He has 7 years’ experience working in the fire protection and code consulting industries.  As the Project Manager, Christian will provide day-to-day project management and engineering services throughout the building code review process.

Stoch, Les, P.Eng.

Les Stoch is President of L. Stoch and Associates, offering electrical engineering services, professional development and training. His industry experience includes 21 years with Ontario Hydro as an Electrical Inspection Manager and Engineer. Mr. Stoch obtained his Electrical Engineering Degree from Sir George Williams University (Concordia) in Montreal. He is a member of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the American Society for Quality, the Ontario Electrical League and the International Association of Electrical Inspectors. He served for eight years on the Provincial Advisory Committee, which develops Ontario's Electrical Safety Code. His work includes forensic engineering and auditing electrical utilities against Ontario's distribution regulation.

Scammell, Angela, B.Sc., M.Adult Ed.

Angela Scammell, B.Sc., M.Adult Ed, has 20 years experience delivering and managing organization development and training in private, public, and academic organizations. As a GE Aircraft-trained Six Sigma Black Belt, she also has significant project management experience in technical, industrial, administrative and business process domains. Angela's company, Scammell & Associates Organization Development Consulting, assists people and processes to perform effectively through group facilitation, training, change acceleration and business process improvement. She has been a Principal Instructor in the St. F. X. University Diploma in Adult Education (Training for the Trainer) program since 1991.
