This musical extravaganza features outstanding student soloists with our talented young orchestra. Popular concerti and arias by Bruch, Beethoven, Kabalevsky, Mozart and many more are performed under the direction of Leonardo Perez and Peter Allen.

Featured soloists this year are Mary Austin, Caroline Boulter, Chloe Dionne, Victoria Dubois, Shanti Sivarulrasa, James Thomas, Hailey Coates, Madeline Maitzen, Charise Catarina Pohl, and Josh Robinson. The concert also features a premiere of an orchestral work by composition student Dylan Hay.

Leonardo Perez, Conductor

Praised for his “assured and lovely” playing by the Classical Voice of North Carolina, Leonardo Perez is currently Head of Strings and Lecturer of Violin and Viola at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he also conducts the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra. Previously, he held the position of Instructor of Violin and Viola at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and was the Orchestra Director of the IUP Symphony Orchestra. He has also taught masterclasses and coached chamber music throughout the United States and Atlantic Canada, including at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City, Sistema New Brunswick in Moncton, New Brunswick, and the Scotia Suzuki School in Halifax, NS. As a conductor, Leonardo has directed the IUP Symphony Orchestra, East Carolina University Symphony Orchestra, and the ECU Chamber Orchestra, collaborating with both faculty and guest artists. He also was the guest conductor of the District 4/6 Festival Orchestra in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Leonardo received his Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from East Carolina University. He holds a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from East Carolina University, with doctoral studies at the University of Iowa. His principal teachers include Hagai Shaham, Ara Gregorian, and Scott Conklin.   

Peter Allen, Conductor

Peter Allen is one of Canada’s most respected and talented musicians. He is known nationally as a concert pianist, composer, conductor and teacher. As a concert pianist, he has been heard for years on CBC regional and national radio performing solo recitals, chamber concerts and concertos with orchestra. Peter is also a highly respected and sought after composer, having fulfilled dozens of commissions. Peter is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre and Associate Professor of music at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University, where he teaches piano, orchestration, and coaches chamber music.
