Study Abroad Opportunities

Students entering their third year of their undergraduate degree program are encouraged to spend up to one year at a university in a German-speaking country.

Why study abroad?

A year in Germany (or Poland, Hungary or Italy) provides students with the opportunity to master the German language and study in depth the cultural heritage of the German-speaking countries within the European context. It offers a unique chance to become familiar with German institutions, customs, way of life and to be part of the rapid changes taking place in Europe. The year-long immersion and the first-hand knowledge of Germany and Europe give participants a linguistic and cultural expertise which is difficult to acquire in any other way.

Students will receive credit at Dalhousie for courses taken in Germany. Advanced classes conducted in German in the senior years help with the intensive immersion process overseas.

Year in Freiburg program

Albert-Ludwigs Universitaet in Freiburg lies on the edge of the Black Forest, in the southwest corner of Germany where Germany, Switzerland and France meet. Arranged through Acadia University in Wolfville, the Canadian Year in Freiburg program is supervised in Germany under the guidance of a resident Canadian professor.

Italy, Hungary and Poland

For students interested in European studies, the Department of German can arrange exchanges with the Universitia degli Studi di Maceratà in Italy, the University of Pecs in Hungary and the University of Posnan in Poland. Dalhousie also has exchange agreements with universities in Heidelberg, Munich and Freiburg.

Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst

Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst offers summer and year-long programs that are open both to German majors and non-majors. Students accepted to the program contribute to teaching and research offered in Germany.

Students from Germany

University students from Germany also benefit from exchange programs. They come to teach in the Department of German and gain valuable work experience.

For students of German for Business, the department offers access to one of the most prestigious MBA-programs in International Industrial Management in Germany at the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, which does not charge tuition fees and co-operates closely with Daimler-Chrysler and Bosch.

For advanced Engineering students, the department offers access to the MSc in Automotive Engineering and the MSc in Information Technology and Automation Systems at the same graduate school.
