ENGL 4990 Honours Capstone
This for-credit required course for Honours students aims to further skills in career planning and in disciplinary research. In addressing the first, the course introduces students to a variety of career possibilities and offers instruction in writing CVs and resumes as well as applying for jobs and graduate programs. Furthering skills in scholarly research, students present their findings in class and at the Honours Colloquium in the Fall Term as they work on developing a successful paper from a previous course into the Honours Essay, a polished, publication-ready research essay of about 5000-7500 words. Each student works with a specialist who supervises the Honours Essay, while the capstone course offers guidance on using available research tools, evaluating extant scholarship, and developing the essay’s argument. Once uploaded to Dalspace in the Winter Term, Honours Essays become permanently accessible digital publications that serve as a record of student achievement.
