Needle retention has been a major challenge for Christmas tree producers. The Needle Retention Research program, established in 2006, is sponsored by the Nova Scotia Christmas Tree Council to identify the physiological mechanisms of needle drop and providing solutions to control needle drop. Our initial evidence suggests that the needle drop is triggered by factors other than water relations, and also that anti-microbial products do not control needle drop. Further research is in progress.
