Nestled in the upper level of the Haley Institute of Animal Science and Aquaculture, Extended Learning offers innovative, high-quality professional development opportunities and programs that reflect the unique strengths of the Faculty of Agriculture.

One local teacher, DeAnne Pelchat from the Truro area, found herself drawn to these offerings as the COVID-19 pandemic began to wane. She was on the lookout for education that was relevant and immediate to her needs.

“I started with the Organic Vegetable Gardener course,” she recalls. “It felt like the perfect way to deepen my gardening knowledge.” The course is fully online and designed for both seasoned gardeners and those just starting out. “I really enjoyed it,” DeAnne says. “After finishing, I wondered if there was something more to complement what I had learned.”

That curiosity led her to the Master Gardener program, which she began in Spring 2023, alongside her Master of Education program in Outdoor Education. “I initially intended to finish all the online [Master Gardener] courses before attending the Summer School,” she explains. However, juggling both programs along with her other responsibilities proved challenging. “I realized I couldn’t manage both sets of courses along with my other responsibilities,” she admits. So, she decided to put the Master Gardener program on hold.

Fortunately, fate intervened, and everything fell into place. “I typically would have had a summer course during the 2024 Summer School period, but the schedules aligned perfectly,” DeAnne shares. “I don’t regret it one bit!”

Master Gardener Summer School is required for those looking to become Certified Master Gardeners with the Atlantic Master Gardeners Association. It includes a week filled with hands-on skill-building and learning activities.

DeAnne enjoyed the collaborative environment. “Working with my classmates and instructors was a highlight,” she says. “There was a good mix of practical knowledge that can only be learned from experienced individuals.”

The Summer School experience also served different purposes for students. “It can introduce skills and concepts learned online or act as a culmination of everything you’ve studied,” DeAnne explains.

She loved meeting classmates at various stages in their learning journeys. “I especially enjoyed cheering on those who had graduated from the Master Gardener Training Program,” she says with a smile.

Networking was another valuable aspect. “Inviting students to participate in sessions with Certified Master Gardeners was fantastic,” DeAnne reflects. “It motivated me and connected me with a great community of plant enthusiasts.”

As she continues her gardening journey, DeAnne looks forward to applying what she’s learned. “The programs have provided significant insight into managing my own garden,” she notes. “I’m excited to incorporate these lessons into my Master’s program research.”

DeAnne received her Certificate of Completion of the Master Gardener Summer School Program in July 2024 from Instructor Carol Goodwin.

Her journey through the Organic Vegetable Gardener and Master Gardener programs has been transformative. DeAnne’s passion for gardening is contagious, and it’s clear that her journey is just beginning.
