Dal‑AC graduate students bring awards from the Science Atlantic Nutrition and Food Conference

The third Annual Science Atlantic Nutrition and Food conference was held in virtual format during April 27-28, 2021.

Ph.D. candidate Niluni Wijesundara received the first place of the Graduate Research Award for her oral presentation on “Herbal essential oils to treat sore throat: antibacterial activity of carvacrol against Streptococcus pyogene”.

The second place of Graduate Research Award was presented to Tharindu Lakshan Suraweera for his poster presentation on “Dietary flavonoids attenuates carcinogen-induced DNA damage in cultured human lung epithelial cells”.  Tharindu is a second year M.Sc. student.

Both graduate students are supervised by Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe of the Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences.

Science Atlantic is a federally incorporated and registered charitable association for scientists, faculty, and students in Atlantic Canada. The mission of the organization is to advance post-secondary education and research in Atlantic Canada by providing opportunities that foster and enrich students, supporting and inspiring researchers, educators, and the broader scientific community, and address important regional issues.
