The Department of Animal Science and Aquaculture in the Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture, Truro, invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure stream faculty position at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the candidate.

Dalhousie University is comprised of 6,000 faculty and staff amongst its 13 faculties. Current enrolment is 18,500 graduate and undergraduate students. An influential driver of the region’s intellectual, social and economic development in the context of environmental protection, Dalhousie has campuses in Halifax and Truro and a satellite of its Medical School is located nearby in Saint John, New Brunswick. This position is located on the Truro campus.

The Department offers technical, undergraduate and graduate programs, including Animal Science, Bioveterinary Science, Veterinary Technology and Aquaculture, and has quality research facilities to support nutrition research including on-campus commercial-level poultry and mink units and an aquaculture centre. The incumbent will teach and conduct research in Nutrition/Nutritional Biochemistry related to non-ruminants; with applicability to poultry, mink, finfish and/or companion animal nutrition.  The successful applicant will complement the Department’s and Faculty’s current strengths in nutrition, food and animal production systems, and will be expected to participate in the Faculty’s initiatives in areas related to the development of new approaches to ensure animal, human and environmental health.

Qualified applicants must possess: a Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition/Nutritional Biochemistry or a closely related field; a demonstrated record of independent, as well as collaborative, research and scholarly publications; have potential for developing a strong externally funded research program, including national granting council funding, in one or more areas of non-ruminant nutrition, such as nutrient utilization, metabolism and environment, nutrition-immunology interactions, nutritional genomics, or bioactive identification related to functional feeds and the microbiome.   The incumbent will have demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching; and excellent oral and written communication skills.

The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate (diploma and degree) students as well as mentor and train graduate students.  The incumbent must have the necessary expertise to teach at the undergraduate level in nutrition and at the graduate level in advanced nutrient metabolism. The teaching assignment will reflect the expertise of the successful candidate within the needs of the Department.  Development of good working relationships with appropriate commodity groups, industry and government will be expected.  Ideally the candidate will become an active and engaged member of the Department and Faculty, working collegially on projects and committees to promote continuous improvement in research, teaching and learning at Dalhousie.
