This week the SeaCycler mooring was successfully recovered from the Labrador Sea after its 14 month deployment. Greg Siddall (DFO) is pictured with Prof. Oliver Zielinski, a chief-scientist of MSM65 cruise, aboard the German research vessel Maria S. Merian following the successful recovery of the SeaCycler components and the remainder of the ca 3500m tall oceanographic mooring. The German scientists onboard conducted a number of calibration casts and collected water samples before and after the recovery in order to maintain the quality of the data from the SeaCycler’s sensors after the long deployment. The joint recovery operation represents one more example of growing cooperation between Germany and Canada in ocean science. Monitoring the activity back on land were Dariia Atamanchuk and Mike Vining (both CERC.OCEAN) who had helped to prepare Greg and the scientific staff on Merian for the operation. The SeaCycler mission is a collaborative effort between the CERC.OCEAN program at Dalhousie, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (DFO), the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego and GEOMAR in Kiel. The CERC.OCEAN team acknowledges the excellent assistance and generous cooperation of Prof. Zielinski, the scientists of MSM65 and crew of R/V Maria S. Merian.
