Laser Safety

Laser Safety Program

A number of teaching and research activities at Dalhousie Univeristy employ the use of lasers. The policies and procedures in the Dalhousie Univeristy Laser Safety Program are designed to provide a reasonable and practical standard for the safe use of these lasers.

Dalhousie Univeristy is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment in its research and teaching laboratories. Providing such an environment is a shared responsibility of all those involved, including the university, departmental chairs, laboratory supervisors, staff and students.

The Laser Safety Program is intended to assist the Dalhousie University community in the effective control of laser hazards. The Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is responsible for the program. Please see the Laser Safety Manual [PDF - 1 MB] for further information.

Laser Registration

All Class 3B and Class 4 lasers on a Dalhousie Univeristy campus must be registered with the LSO, Sarah Langille.

To register a laser, a Laser Registration Form [PDF - 125 KB] must be submitted. A Hazard Assessment Form and a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) must accompany the registration. Please submit to the LSO via fax, email, or interdepartmental mail.

Upon receipt of a completed laser registration, the LSO will review the forms and issue a Laser Permit. The permit holder will be sent a copy of the permit to have on record. All Class 3B and 4 lasers must be permitted to be housed and operating at the university. The LSO reserves the right to terminate laser operations until proper laser registration and permitting protocol is followed.

Laser Safety Training

Laser Safety Training is offered to those working with lasers at Dalhousie. The training is available as a self-registered course on Brightspace.

To register for Laser Safety Training, ensure that you are not logged into Brightspace and then please see self-registration
