Dr. Paul Hebert, the new president of CIHR, joined the university delegates and discussed some of his initial thoughts on the CIHR programs and his plans to visit institutions and learn more.
The discussion lasted the full hour. The strongest theme in the discussion was that CIHR needs to support “Excellence to Impact” through collaboration and partnership. He emphasized the need for universities to work internally to support peer review to support top quality submissions for project grants and priority announcements. He challenged universities to value and reward collaboration. He also expressed that collaboration with health authorities was key to a rich health research ecosystem. He also expressed his gratitude for increased federal funding to support biomedical research and is hopeful that provinces will continue to support research.
Dr. Hebert will be traveling and learning more over the next months. The University delegates will be updated on the vision and any changes and will continue to report on CIHR updates to their research communities.
