The partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and NSERC have established the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for foreign researchers. NSERC is the Canadian nominating authority for the JSPS opportunities. A limited number of promising early career researchers will be given the opportunity to conduct research in Japanese universities and in designated research institutions and laborites. The following opportunities are now open:
1. JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan – Standard Program
This program offers early career researchers an opportunity to conduct research for 12-24 months in Japan with financial support.
Eligibility
- Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
- Not have Japanese nationality or be a permanent resident of Japan
- Hold or expect to hold a doctoral degree (according to the conferred or convocation date) prior to the proposed start date of the postdoctoral fellowship
- Not hold, or have held, a JSPS – Standard postdoctoral fellowship
- Have obtained your doctoral degree no more than six years before the start date of the fellowship.

2. JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan – Short term program (NEW!)
This program offers early career researchers an opportunity to conduct research for 1 to 12 months in Japan with financial support.
Eligibility
- Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
- Not have Japanese nationality or be a permanent resident of Japan
- Be scheduled to receive a doctoral degree within two years of the start date of the fellowship OR have received your doctoral degree (according to the conferred or convocation date) no more than six years before the start date of the fellowship
- Not hold, or have held, a JSPS – Standard or JSPS – Short-term postdoctoral fellowship

External: April 1, 2025
