Joint Initiative for Digital Citizen Research

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is pleased to announce the Initiative for Digital Citizen Research (IDCR), a new joint initiative with the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH) and one component of Canadian Heritage’s Digital Citizen Initiative. The IDCR aims to develop a better understanding of the impacts of online disinformation in Canada in order to better inform programs and policies, build Canada’s capacity to conduct research on – and related to – countering online disinformation and other related online harms, and help foster a community of researchers engaged with digital citizenship and online disinformation in Canada. 

IDCR funding will be offered to meritorious and relevant research projects through four streams:

  • IDCR Research Grants valued at up to $250,000 over 3 years;
  • IDCR Research Grant supplements of $20,000 over one year;
  • IDCR Postdoctoral Fellowship supplements, valued at $10,000 over one year, for SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship holders; and
  • IDCR Doctoral Award supplements, valued at $10,000 over one year, for holders of SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships or Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program—Doctoral Scholarships. 

All grant and supplement holders will be expected to use their IDCR funding to participate at the annual Conference on Digital Citizen Research to be organized by Canadian Heritage. For more information on IDCR funding and how to apply, please refer to the program description.   

In addition, SSHRC and Canadian Heritage are pleased to announce an IDCR Special Call to be issued as part of the SSHRC Connection Grants funding opportunities of November 1, 2019 and February 1, 2020.
