Strategic Innovation Fund

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on April 8, 2019 in Announcements

Dear colleagues,

In late March 2019, the government announced a new stream of the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), Stream 5: National Ecosystems. SIF is currently a $2.31-billion program designed to attract business investments by encouraging R&D to accelerate the technology transfer and commercialization of innovative products, processes and services. SIF Stream 5 is expected to provide dedicated support for large-scale, national innovation ecosystems that promote high impact collaborations across Canada. The objective of this new stream is to foster collaboration between multiple organizations, including: SMEs, incubators/accelerators, academic and research institutions, and large corporations, in order to accelerate commercialization in areas with demonstrated Canadian advantage.

Although academic institutions are not eligible to be lead applicants, the fund will be of interest to universities because of the inclusion of postsecondary institutions as partners in the competition. SIF Stream 5 will be open to all areas and sectors of the economy through a continuous intake of proposals and focuses on commercialization initiatives in any area with a demonstrated Canadian advantage. A formal announcement concerning the release of Stream 5 is expected within the next few months.

Sincerely,
