The Canadian Light Source – the nation’s brightest light Workshop

With Jeffrey Cutler, Pawel Grochulski, Jeff Warner and Toby Bond

Canadian Light Source

Wednesday, November 21st, 10:00 AM -12:00 PM
University Hall, McDonald Building
Dalhousie University

The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is Canada’s national synchrotron facility and one of only 20 across the globe. Located in Saskatoon, on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan, it is the brightest light in the country—millions of times brighter than even the sun. It is used by scientists to see incredible detail at the molecular level of matter, shedding light on the most important processes, including life itself.

Every year, more than 1,000 scientists from across Canada and around the world make discoveries at the CLS, in areas including:

  • Health, research including diagnosis and drug development related to many diseases including cancers, heart disease, cystic fibrosis and antibiotic-resistant infections.
  • Agriculture, new insights in improved crop and plant development, fertilizers, drought and temperature resistance, and soil management.
  • Environmental science, (includes climate change), advancements in mine remediation techniques, heavy oil extraction efficiencies, high efficiency catalysts for petroleum refinement, renewable resources, and energy storage as well as remediation of contaminated groundwater , and heavy metal contamination in soil and water.
  • Advanced materials, new insights and applications in high temperature superconductors, fuel cells, eco-composite materials, solar power, catalysts, microdevices, nanotubes, and new materials.

This workshop will detail how the CLS works within many scientific disciplines and showcase some of the exciting science emerging from each of these areas.

Please join us on November 21st.  Please RSVP to Jeana Daye at jeana.daye@dal.ca
