CIHR Operating Grant : Early Career Investigator Grants in Maternal, Reproductive, Child & Youth Health

Posted by Danielle Andres on March 12, 2018 in Research Funding

This funding opportunity to support New Investigators in Maternal, Reproductive, Child and Youth Health is a collaboration between seven CIHR institutes. The goal of the program is to build research capacity in maternal, reproductive, child and youth health by funding operating grants to new investigators.

The program will fund research across the four pillars (biomedical, clinical, health systems services, and population health) that has the potential to have a significant impact on maternal, reproductive, child and youth health outcomes according to the mandates of the participating CIHR institutes.

For an application to be eligible, the Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be an independent researcher appointed at an eligible institution and, at the time of the application deadline, the NPA must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Have held an independent research appointment for a period of less than 60 months.
  • Been awarded operating grant funding of less than $500,000 Canadian dollars in total as a Nominated Principal Investigator (or equivalent role in non-CIHR competitions) through a competitive process.
  • Have at least 50% protected time for research.
  • If applying to the IAPH funding pool, the NPA must self-identify as Indigenous to Canada (i.e. First Nations, Inuit, or Métis).

Eligible applicants may apply to both the 2018 CIHR Early Career Investigators in Maternal, Reproductive, Child and Youth Health and 2018 SickKids Foundation-CIHR-IHDCYH New Investigator Research Grants in Child and Youth Health competitions but can only receive funding from one of the competitions, regardless of whether the applications are for different projects.

The total amount available from CIHR for this funding opportunity is $1,260,000, enough to fund up to 12 grants. The maximum amount per grant from CIHR is $35,000 per year for up to 3 years for a total of $105,000. The CIHR contribution must be matched at a minimum of 1:1 by the successful applicant's host institution and/or other partner(s), such as a charitable organization, philanthropic foundation, or industry partner.

  • Matching funds must be 100% cash contributions; cash equivalent matching contributions are not eligible.
  • Matching funds must be committed by the application deadline date; details must be provided in the Partnership Details form (see How to Apply section).
  • Start-up funds provided to an applicant by their host institution are eligible as matching funds if some, or all, of those funds can be committed to the project. Any portion of start-up funding already committed to another research project is not eligible. The details must be provided in a letter of support.
