From Start-Up to Exit: The Evolution of DVS Sciences

Every founder can relate to the challenges of conceiving, nurturing and (especially) funding a start-up. Life sciences founders know this struggle all too well – in particular, those seeking venture capital in Canada. Even stories from Canadian companies with the biggest exits include tales of woe from their early days.

Join us Thursday, October 19, as Scott Tanner shares the story of DVS Sciences (now Fluidigm Canada), from technical conception to eventual exit. Glean some tips from somebody who’s been there, done that.

Scott Tanner, (Former) Founding President, CEO and CTO, DVS Sciences Inc., (Retired) Professor (IBBME, Chemistry), University of Toronto

Scott was the founding president and CEO of DVS Sciences. He assumed the CTO position following the merger of DVS Sciences with Fluidigm in 2014. He saw the company through the development and commercial launch of its first products, the securing of Series A financing, and the subsequent establishment of its facilities in Markham, Ontario, and headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. The products DVS Sciences has brought to the global market were developed at the University of Toronto, where Scott was a professor in the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, and then in chemistry.

In 2015, Scott retired from his last position as CTO of Fluidigm Corporation. He now sits on the board of directors of Ontario Genomics and of Life Sciences Ontario, and is an adjunct professor in chemistry at York University.
