New Event for Part‑time Academics

Focused on Teaching and Learning

Have you recently started teaching part-time at Dalhousie? This event is for you.

Join us on Thursday, September 14th from 3:00 to 5:30 pm for Focused on Teaching and Learning at University Hall in the Macdonald building. Fiona Black, Associate Vice-President Academic, will be there to welcome you and address the importance of your contributions to teaching and learning at Dalhousie. Professionals from around Dalhousie will offer brief introductions to—and time for you to ask questions about—the many teaching and learning supports and professional development opportunities available this year. There will be coffee and treats and handouts full of valuable information. There will also be a Q&A Panel of former and current part-time academics, with a variety of experiences teaching at Dalhousie, who are eager to answer your questions.

This is a free, voluntary professional development and information event offered to part-time academics. It will help provide you with the necessary resources to be successful at Dal.

Welcomes part-time academics to this new event, and provides institutional context for your very important contributions to teaching and learning at Dalhousie.  

3:15 to 3:30 pm

Betsy Keating, Educational Developer (Faculty), Centre for Learning and Teaching
Introduces the supports offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

3:30 to 3:45 pm

Michelle McDonald, Faculty Support Specialist, Academic Technology Services
Introduces the Learning Management System, Brightspace, and discusses how to access support for using the system and its tools. 

3:45 to 4:00 pm

Dr. Margie Clow-Bohan, Manager, Dalhousie Writing Centre
Introduces the Centre's resources and services and discusses how to access writing supports for you and your students.

4:00 to 4:15 pm

Lindsay McNiff, Learning & Instruction Librarian, Dalhousie Libraries
Introduces the Dal Libraries' support services and answers your questions about where to find help and information for teaching and learning, research, and student supports.

4:15 to 4:30 pm

Break 

4:30 to 4:45 pm

Dr. Karen Foster, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology
Discusses some highlights of research into contingent work for part-time academics and offers some career advice.

4:45 to 5:00 pm

Janice MacInnis, Manager, Organizational Health, Human Resources
Discusses the importance of maintaining your health and offers some advice and strategies for continued wellness. 

5:00 to 5:30 pm

Question and Answer Panel
Former and current part-time academics, with a variety of experiences teaching at Dalhousie, will answer your questions about working part-time at Dal.
