Respecting the Diversity of Students’ Mental Health

Jacob Fletcher
Graduate Teaching Associate
Centre for Learning and Teaching

As educators, we peer through a small window into the complex lives of our students. Every individual has a unique story that will never be completely transparent to us. Some students may be experiencing deep emotional distress, which can have a powerful effect on their ability to effectively learn and meet expectations inside and outside the classroom. How can we gain a better understanding of these students’ needs in terms of their learning? What are the challenges we face as educators in addressing the mental health needs of students, and how can we overcome these challenges? This workshop aims to highlight these points with group activities and discussions to improve our awareness and respectfulness of the diversity of mental wellness in the classroom.
