Embracing Cultural Diversity in Our Teaching Environment

How Differences Improve a Unified Educational Experience

Jacob Fletcher, MSc Candidate
Biology Department
Graduate Teaching Associate
Centre for Learning and Teaching

Overview

One of the most powerful learning tools in an educational setting is the ability to embrace diversity. Young adults around the globe are increasingly seeking educational experiences abroad. This amalgamation of cultural diversity in the classroom can provide unique opportunities to enhance the learning environment. Students are unified by routine, in which they all march to class, carrying a notebook or a laptop with a desire to learn. Though similar through convention, these students carry with them a vast array of backgrounds, passions, cultures, ideas, goals and learning abilities. Diversity and open-mindedness for new and exciting perspectives in the classroom is a privilege for the overall teaching and learning experience.
