Curriculum Design: Renewal and Creation

Susan Joudrey, PhD
Senior Educational Developer, Curriculum
Centre for Learning and Teaching
Dalhousie University

Recently, curriculum in higher education has received increased consideration from faculty members and educational theorists. While programs that are required to meet accreditation standards have reflected on their curricula in systematic ways, many disciplines have not yet had the opportunity to fully explore how the individual courses that form the program unite to develop graduates who can promote and enhance the field of study.

You might be asking yourself, “How do my individual courses contribute to an overall program?” or “How is curriculum design related to student learning?” During this discussion, we’ll explore what’s meant by the term “curriculum,” what components are considered part of a curriculum, and why considering the curriculum makes a difference to student learning and the advancement of an academic discipline.
