Team Based Learning: An alternative to lecture or problem based learning formats in Dalhousie classrooms
Jo Welch, Assistant Professor,
School of Health and Human Performance
Professor Welch began teaching Human Nutrition at Dalhousie in 2005 using a standard lecture format. Her search for greater student engagement led her to first test Team Based Learning in Fall, 2012. Team Based Learning is a comprehensive course format in which students collaborate in small permanent groups. This system is used in several medical schools as an alternative to Problem Based or Case Based Learning; it has also been successfully used for some large undergraduate courses, mostly in the USA and Australia. After her initial trial of Team Based Learning at Dalhousie, modifications to the format prompted by student feedback have been well received. In this workshop, Jo will share her methods, experiences, and subsequent modifications as well as ongoing challenges.
