The role of mentors in higher education

Jill Marie McSweeney, IDPhD Student
Graduate Teaching Associate
Centre for Learning and Teaching

Mentors are an important part of a student's professional, personal and educational development. Mentors can come in many forms: your adviser, a departmental faculty member, or another graduate student. We will discuss the benefits of mentors, especially on your career; how to recognize good mentors from not-so-good mentors; what it means to be a mentor and a mentee; and how you can begin to develop your own mentor-mentee relationship.
