Lunch & Learn

Topic 1: Supporting Mature Students in Online Courses

Learners who have been away from an academic setting for a while and who have not used technology in learning can face significant challenges in online courses. The School of Social Work has developed and variety of online student resources to support students so that they can be successful in online learning. Join us for a discussion on our approach to supporting mature students.

Topic 2: Using Learning Outcomes: Tales from a Former Skeptic

Developing learning outcomes for teaching is not always met with great enthusiasm, since many seasoned instructors have managed to teach just fine without them. However, as I recently learned, they can be immensely useful to help professor and student focus on relevant skills and material. I will give an example of how I recently applied learning outcomes at the beginning of one of my popular lab activities (measuring behaviour in rats on cocaine), and why I think they are an important, and underutilized, teaching and learning tool.

CLT will host a noon hour, Lunch & Learn series for those working in the online teaching environment, starting Friday, January 18, 2013 and continuing on the third Friday monthly to May, 2013.

The purpose of the Lunch & Learn is to give faculty who are teaching online, using the online environment as a component of their campus courses, or interested in moving some of their content online, an opportunity to come together in a sharing environment to learn about what other faculty members are doing and to hear about current research and best practices.

These will be very informal sessions facilitated by Adrienne Sehatzadeh, Instructional Designer/Solutions Researcher, eLearning Team, CLT. The sessions will be fashioned from input/feedback from attending faculty and staff. We will take part of the first meeting to map out a general plan.

Would you like to know how your colleagues are working in the online teaching environment? Are you using online tools in an innovative way that you would like to share? Are you curious about pedagogical approaches and best practices for the use of various tools in your online course? Then, you should benefit from this Lunch & Learn.
