How to engage first year students: Instructional practices that work
This workshop will delve into the transition between high school and university for new students at Dalhousie. First year students are getting their bearings in many aspects of life during first year and so may find the challenges inherent with the transition to university especially difficult. How can an instructor of a first year course help students connect to the subject matter, assist them as they become more independent and confident students, and engage them in a class that is often large?
Alan Dick has a great deal of experience from his time as a teacher and a workshop leader and will provide useful suggestions and models of instruction based on the literature and his ongoing feedback from students. Prepare to leave this workshop with new inspiration and ideas for your own class!
