Diversity at Dal

Celebrating our cultural mosaic

The classroom isn’t the only part of the university experience where people have new experiences. A diversity of thoughts, a diversity of ideas, and a diversity of people is part of what makes Dalhousie such a great place to be. With students representing over 100 countries across the globe, we value and honour diverse experiences and perspectives, create welcoming and respectful learning environments, and promote access, opportunity and equality for all.

There are many ways for Dalhousians to celebrate diversity on campus. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Get to know the people around you. There’s so much to learn from everyone else on campus: ask questions to make connections and learn more about the people who make our campus so diverse.
  • Stay informed. There are plenty of events and opportunities to learn more about issues related to diversity, human rights and social justice. Remember, there’s a lot to be learned outside of the classroom.
  • Use inclusive language, or language that won’t exclude or hurt others. You may come across language or terms that are new to you while at Dalhousie. The best way to learn about them is to ask questions when a term comes up that you don’t know or understand.
  • Celebrate with others! Many societies and departments regularly host events that celebrate our differences and provide opportunities to get to know new cultures, people or festivities.

There are also a number of resources on campus that reflect and support our diverse community:
