Our Staff

Dr. Glenn Andrea

Dr. Andrea is a Dalhousie University alum having attended Dalhousie Medical School in 1990. He has been a family physician for 22 years at Student Health Services, and is now also the Medical Director. His special interests include: STI prevention/management, obstetrics, office vasectomy procedure, sexual health, Dal Ally, LGBTQ health. 

Dr. David Botten

Dr. Botten completed both his undergraduate (BScKin) and medical degrees at Dalhousie, a Family Medicine Residency at Queen’s University, and a Diploma in Travel Medicine through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Scotland. For the past 13 years, he has worked as a Physician at Dalhousie Student Health Services. He is also the Medical Director of a local travel health clinic, has been appointed a member of the Canadian Travel Medicine Working Group, and is an active member of the International Society of Travel Medicine, including its Student Travel Abroad Interest Group. Apart from international health and travel, special interests include sexual health, smoking cessation, skin disorders, and minor procedures (e.g. mole or cyst removal).

Dr. Cathy Connell

A graduate of Dalhousie Medicine 1987, Dr. Connell completed her Family Medicine Residency at St. Michaels in Toronto before returning to Halifax. She has been a Family Physician at Student Health Services for 25 years, thoroughly enjoying the ever-changing student population and eager to follow those who stay on as community members as they grow their families. She follows all aspects of general family medicine with advanced interest in contraception, prenatal and baby care, IUD insertion and sclerotherapy. Dr. Connell's special interests include international students and their families. 

Christina Elgee, RN, MPH

Christina is the Student Health Outreach Nurse with Student Health Services, with a primary role in student and faculty outreach and engagement. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Nursing from the University of New Brunswick and her Masters of Public Health with a major in population health from Memorial University. She sits on the board of directors for the Public Health Association of Nova Scotia and is a member of Health Providers Against Poverty. Christina’s background is health equity, diversity & inclusion, youth health, and community engagement.  

Dr. Karen Prokai

Dr. Prokai completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo in 1987, attended Medical School at University of Ottawa in 1991 and studied Family Medicine at McGill in 1994. Dr. Prokai landed in the Maritimes and has worked at Student Health Services for 18 years. She is always looking forward to getting to know the students, teaching and practicing preventive health care and guiding them to navigate our health care system. Dr. Prokai offers a mixed practice that provides a lot of variety in a facility that allows minor surgical procedures from stitches to ingrown toenails and lumps and bumps. 

Dr. Susan Gowan

Dr. Gowan has been a family physician at Student Health Services for 25 years. She graduated from the University of Ottawa and completed her Family Medicine residency at Dalhousie University. She enjoys the diversity of the student and community populations. Her practice encompasses all aspects of Family Medicine including: women’s health, IUD insertion, minor surgical procedures and LGBTQ health. 

Dr. Sherry Jain

Dr. Jain completed her undergrad degree at University of Guelph in Engineering, attended Medical School at Memorial University and studied Family Medicine at Queen's University.  She enjoys practicing at Student Health Services with both the student and community patients. Her practice includes all aspects of family medicine including: IUD insertions, lumps and bumps, women’s health concerns and LGBTQ health. 

Hazel Ling

Hazel Ling is a Social Worker at Student Health Services and a member of the Student Wellness Team as of January 2016. Although she does not provide therapy as a psychologist would, she can support students through discussions who are having challenges with:

  • Dealing with stress – school, work, life, relationships, roommates and family
  • Mental health concerns and well-being
  • Relationship issues
  • Immediate crisis situations
  • Practical issues with housing, finances, food

Students do not need a referral to see Hazel. Appointments can be made in-person or by calling 902-494-2171.

Dr. Don MacQuarrie

Trained in Family and Emergency Medicine, Dr. MacQuarrie has provided full time emergency physician services at both Dartmouth General Hospital and Toronto East General Hospital. He assumed responsibility for Dr. Joyce Curtis’ practice at Student Health Services in January 2014, and continues to work part time as an emergency physician at the Dartmouth General Hospital. 

Dr. Amy Mallory

Dr. Mallory completed her medical training and Family Medicine Residency at Dalhousie University. She has been a staff physician at Student Health Services since January 2013. Dr. Mallory's previous experience includes a community based practice in Bedford, NS and providing care specifically to immigrant women in Calgary, AB. On her return to the Maritimes, Dr. Mallory was excited to join the team at Student Health Services, where she enjoys caring for both her student and community patients. With two young children of her own, Dr. Mallory has a special interest in the care of families, sexual health and transgender health (WPATH certified).

Dr. Katherine Robinson

Dr. Robinson did her Family Medicine Residency in Halifax and has been a family physician at Student Health Services for 25 years. She offers prenatal care and delivery and enjoys working with young families and international students. She has special interest in sexual health and is LGBTQ supportive. She offers minor gynecological procedures, including IUD insertion and removal, endometrial biopsy and intrauterine insemination as a fertility option.
