Counselling & Psychological Services are free to registered students of Dalhousie University and University of King's College. 

Your first appointment (intake appointment)

What is an intake appointment?

Students who are looking for personal or learning disability counselling need to have an intake appointment first. The purpose of this 30-50 minute meeting is to: 

  • Screen & assess your situation
  • Discuss your options 
  • Suggest strategies for coping with immediate issues
  • Create a wellness plan

Students looking for career counselling do not need an intake appointment, and can make an appointment by calling 902-494-2081. 

How do I make an intake appointment?

All intake appointments are walk-in only (you must drop-by in person). Walk-in appointments are available every hour that Counselling Services is open.

What to expect in your intake appointment

  • You will be greeted at Counselling Services by the receptionist 
  • The expected wait time will be visible on the white board in the waiting room 
  • You will complete 2 intake forms 
  • You will have your intake appointment 
  • You will leave your intake appointment with a wellness plan 

Walk-in counselling

What is walk-in counselling?

Once you have had your intake appointment, you can walk-in at any time Counselling Services is open for a single-session counselling appointment. The purpose of a walk-in appointment is to:

  • Serve as a single session counselling option
  • Find strategies to cope with an immediate issue
  • Determine other sources of support on campus 
  • Check-in on your wellness plan 

What to expect in your walk-in counselling session

  • You will be greeted upon entering the Counselling Centre by the receptionist
  • The expected wait time will be visible on the white board in the waiting room 
  • You will have your appointment with a walk-in counsellor
  • You will leave your appointment with strategies to deal with immediate issues and an updated wellness plan

Follow-up (ongoing therapy) appointments

What is a follow-up appointment?

Following your intake appointment, if you require further counselling you will be placed on our waiting list to see a psychologist. These sessions are intended to delve into persistent issues and concerns. Waiting lists vary depending on your current situation and time of year. 

What to expect in your follow-up appointment

  • You will be greeted upon entering Counselling Services by the receptionist 
  • The receptionist will notify your psychologist that you have arrived
  • Your psychologist will meet you in the waiting room
  • You will have your follow-up appointment (approximately 50 minutes) 
  • At the end of your follow-up appointment, your psychologist will talk with you about next steps and whether that involves additional counselling or other steps on your wellness plan
