Margie Clow-Bohan

Dr. Margie Clow-Bohan retired from the Writing Centre on October 31, 2020.

This note from Margie describes the Writing Centre’s history from 2004 to October 2020:

I came to the Writing Centre in 2004 after three years in the School of Business teaching Business Communication.  During the intervening 16+ years, the Centre has grown from one staff member to 4-5 permanent employees working alongside 25-40 tutors and receptionists.  Here are some of the things that I accomplished (in many areas with my team):

  • Established a Centre that employs tutors from across the curriculum to support the writing development of students in all programs.  At the peak in 2011-2012, 11,600 30-minute tutorials were conducted.
  • Hired and mentored a diverse group of students as tutors
  • Obtained certification from the College Reading & Learning Association for a 10-module tutor training program – first writing centre in Canada to do so
  • Was a founding member of the Canadian Writing Centre Association and the Atlantic Chapter, as well as a member of the International Writing Center, the European Association of Teachers of Academic Writing, and the Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing
  • Attained a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies (Writing & Organizational Behaviour) from Dalhousie in 2012 – looking at professional identity and leadership in interprofessional teams of engineers and businesspeople
  • Was a Faculty Associate with the Centre for Learning & Teaching (CLT)
  • Attained the University Teaching Fellow rank in the DFA

I believe that the Writing Centre’s success is due to an incredible group of writing advisors and tutors over the years. I would like to thank Janice Eddington, Adam Auch, and Kala Hirtle for being great colleagues. I wish you much success in the future. I also would like to remember all the students who walked through our doors (or came online this year). You have taught me a great deal. I wish you well, too! I look forward to continuing my research and writing interests. Be kind to each other. Work hard. Be safe.

Margie
