One of the first labs we had was in a field on campus. We used a sweep net to collect bugs, which we dumped in a container. And the amount of things bounding around in that container—it’s pretty incredible. It’s a whole other world, hiding just out of sight.

The research I was doing had an immediate impact, and that was hugely exciting. We went beyond the textbooks and learned by getting in the field and doing. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your work yield real results for real people.

I just fell in love with the place and the people. The campus is beautiful, and the people there are my second family.
