SOSA requirements

Specific information for admission to SoSA grad programs

The Sociology and Social Anthropology (SoSA) first round application deadline is January 15. The January 15 deadline is imperative if you expect to be considered for scholarships, and students who apply before this deadline are given priority for admission. Students who apply after January 15 may be considered for admission, but only if space is available. If you are an international student, you are encouraged to apply to our program in December.

Please note that some scholarship and deadlines might occur before this date. Check the Faculty of Graduate Studies website for scholarship information and deadlines.

Preference is given to applicants with degrees in Sociology or Anthropology and an average of A- or higher. Students with degrees in other disciplines may be considered if space is available, but they are generally required to do extra coursework to fill in any gaps in their backgrounds.

We recommend that you contact a faculty member who works in your area about your research interests prior to the submission of your application.

We admit once a year; all programs start in September.

APPLY TO OUR GRAD PROGRAMS

In addition to the online application form, the following materials should be sent directly to the Department:

• Two original transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended*
• A statement of interest (1-2 pages for MA applicants; 2-4 pages for PhD applicants)
• A résumé (CV)
• Two confidential academic letters of reference (however, hard copies are not required if the letters have been requested via the online application system)**
• A writing sample (e.g. course paper or thesis chapter)
• Proof of English language competency (e.g. TOEFL) for applicants whose native language is not English***

*These transcripts can be mailed directly from the post-secondary institution to our department or the transcripts can be included with the applicants materials in their original sealed unopened envelopes.

**Please note that electronic reference letters require special attention to detail when entering the referee's name and email address.  Once the application fee is received, the online system sends an electronic reference link to the referee's email address.  It is the student's responsibility to contact the referees and ensure the process isi understood and complete.
