Advanced Standing

If you have an outstanding record at the graduate or senior undergraduate levels in the subject areas covered by our curriculum, you may apply for advanced standing in the Financial Services specilization. Contact our CFAME team to find out more.

In addition, we recognize the professional education achievements of applicants who have completed specific designations, certificates or programs in banking, financial planning, investment, insurance and group benefit management with leading industry educators and industry affiliations.

Advocis

 

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to this stream of the MBA (Financial Services) Program, applicants must have completed the CLU® designation program from Advocis®, The Financial Advisors Association of Canada (CLU designation - Chartered Life Underwriter Designation Program) and must be in good standing with The Institute™, The Institute for Advanced Financial Education™.

Students who have acheived the CLU designation will be granted 3 advanced standing credits in the Dalhousie MBA (Financial Services) program which will require students to complete a total of 11 courses.

Applicants must hold a degree recognized by Dalhousie University equivalent to a 4 year bachelor degree, with an equivalent of a minimum B average (GPA 3.0 on a 4.3 scale ). Applicants must also have at least five years experience in the financial services industry at the appropriate level. Applicants who do not meet the standard admission criteria listed above may still be given consideration Contact us for details.

The Dalhousie MBA (Financial Services) program is made up of 14 courses, 10 core and 4 electives:

Students with the CLU designation need to complete the 10 core courses listed below plus 1 of the four electives.

Canadian Securities Institute (CSI)

If you’ve completed the CSI’s Professional Banking Program, Personal Financial Planning, Personal Trust, Investment Management or Wealth Management designations, you may be eligible to reduce from 14 to 10 the number of classes required to complete our program.

Specifically, if you hold either the CSI’s Professional Banking Program, Investment Management or Wealth Management designations, you’ll need to complete our 10 mandatory classes – but none of our four elective classes.

If you hold the CSI’s Personal Financial Planning or Personal Trust designations, you’ll need to complete our 10 mandatory classes – but only two of our four elective classes.  

Please note: You must have achieved an overall average mark of at least 70 per cent to be eligible for advanced standing.

Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC)

 

If you have already achieved the FPSC’s Certified Financial Planner designation, you may be eligible to forgo up to three of our program’s elective classes.

Please note: If you do not have classes or designations with one of these organizations, you may still be able to have others recognized for advanced standing. Please contact us to find out more.

 


International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP)

If you have earned part or all of the IFEBP’s Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation, you may be eligible to reduce from 14 to 10 the number of classes required to complete our MBA (Financial Services). 

Specifically, if you hold either the GBA, RPA or CMS specialty designations within CEBS, you may be eligible to forgo two of our program’s four elective classes.

If you have completed two of these specialty designations, you may be eligible to forgo three of our elective classes.

Finally, if you have completed the entire CEBS designation, you may be eligible to forgo all four of our elective classes.

However, please note: You must have achieved an overall average mark of at least 70 per cent to be eligible for advanced standing.

LOMA

If you have already achieved LOMA’s Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) Program designation (see below), you may be eligible to forgo two of our program’s four elective classes.

However, please note: You must have achieved an overall average mark of at least 80 per cent to be eligible for advanced standing.
