Ultra-fast electro-optic switching is critical not only in high-performance communications but also in fast scanning techniques for cellular digital imaging. Silicon and other semiconductors are materials of choice for nanophotonic devices.
Recent work proposes a future path to explore, analyze and implement novel types of ultra-fast switches with unprecedented potential parameters, such as speeds in hundreds of gigahertz and control voltages of less than one volt.
Trainees in this stream will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in relevant advanced areas.
