QEII Scholars: the next generation of global leaders and community builders

Posted by Dalhousie Research Services on March 20, 2015 in Community Highlights

The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship Program is building a dynamic community of young global leaders, and Dalhousie is pleased to be a member. The program, funded through a joint initiative of the Rideau Hall Foundation, Community Foundations of Canada and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, offers global experiences for students in Canada and other Commonwealth countries that will benefit them throughout their careers.

Dalhousie has teamed up with partners in the Caribbean, Uganda and Tanzania to provide opportunities for students (both at Dal and those in other Commonwealth countries looking to study at Dal) to gain academic credit while studying internationally and expanding their networks. The program will help prepare young Commonwealth citizens for their career goals, while making positive contributions to both their own and other Commonwealth countries.

Building experience outside of the classroom

The program offers international opportunities for Dalhousie students across four faculties:

  • Graduate students in Marine Management (or related programs) can apply for internships in the Caribbean;
  • Graduate students in Global Health fields and International Development Studies (IDS) can apply for funded placements to conduct thesis-related field research in Tanzania and Uganda; and
  • Senior undergraduate and graduate students in Global Health fields, International Development Studies and Agriculture can apply for internship placements with NGOs in Uganda and Tanzania.

Graduate studies opportunities at Dal

Dal will also welcome graduate students from specific Commonwealth countries as part of the QEII Scholarship Program. Through their partnership, IDS will award three students from Makarere University in Uganda with scholarships to complete their Masters in International Development Studies at Dal. The Marine Affairs Program will also welcome three Caribbean students into its Masters of Marine Management degree program.

Building a life long network

In addition to gaining academic credit and international experience, the QEII Scholars and Interns will be part of a global network. The online-based network will help participants make connections for their studies and careers while maintaining the relationships they built through the program. Participants will also take part in Public Engagement activities that will enable them to share their experiences and develop skills that will benefit their careers.

The program is now accepting applications from Dal students for international placements this spring and summer. Those interested in applying for the program can contact Jennifer Morawiecki, International Research Facilitator (Jennifer.Morawiecki@dal.ca) for more information on the Program and how to apply.
