Subject: Dalhousie Diversity Faculty Awards Update

Congratulations to the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering – the first two faculties to be awarded with a Dalhousie Diversity Faculty Award.

The Diversity Faculty Award program was announced last year with a goal to increase the number of faculty members from underrepresented groups. The first call for submissions went out in November and generated a tremendous amount of support, with a number of faculties submitting either formal submissions or expressions of interest. The top two formal submissions were from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering, and recruitment for the Diversity Faculty Award positions will get underway this summer/fall. The next call for submissions to the program will occur in the spring of 2013.

For more information about the Dalhousie Diversity Faculty Award program, please contact:

Last chance to place a bid - museum and water park passes, hair appointments, books, and more.  Encourage your colleagues, friends and family to support the cause: spread the word!

Future auctions - posted at http://uccfundraising.typepad.com/my-blog/   Watch for wine tours, museum passes, etc.

We need your help to increase awareness of plans to increase the number of quality early learning and care spots available in our community on the Dalhousie campus.  With >300 families on the wait-list, too many households experience difficulties in securing quality childcare.

Thanks for your support!  Let's be successful!

    Job Evaluation Information Session

Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU) and Confidential, Clerical and Secretarial Group (CCS) will participate in job evaluation procedures during the course of their employment at Dalhousie University. In order to familiarize NSGEU and CCS employees with the process and policies regarding job evaluation and to answer related questions, an information session will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012.

This is a good opportunity for employees to further understand how classification of Technical and Clerical positions in the University takes place. Supervisors of NSGEU and CCS employees are also encouraged to join us for this session.

If you (incumbent or supervisor) plan to attend, please register individually by Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at https://events-eod.dal.ca/workshop.php?id=353

For further information, please contact Compensation & Job Evaluation at job.evaluation@dal.ca or 494-8886.

Subject: Go online with your reading list - new eReserve service for faculty

Want to make course-related articles and book chapters available electronically to your students in New OWL?

The Dalhousie Libraries are offering faculty a new service this May: an option to have links to licensed e-content added to your reading lists and uploaded to New OWL by one of the Dal Libraries’ Circulation staff, with copyright clearance obtained if necessary.

By offering this service the Libraries are hoping to build new partnerships with faculty, meet the students where they are, and provide quick and reliable access to library resources.

For details and contact information please see our blog post at:

    1)       Pre-Retirement Planning Sessions

Because we may spend a large portion of our lives in retirement, it is vital to start planning for this stage of life as early as possible.  We tend to put off considering our options and making decisions. For retirement to be a positive phase, however, it is important to start thinking early about how we want to spend our retirement years, and then take steps, both financially and in lifestyle, to make it possible.  To help you make these decisions, Dalhousie University, through Human Resources, offers a Pre-Retirement Planning program.

Employees 45 years of age and over are eligible to attend these workshops free of charge. As appropriate, please liaise with your supervisor concerning your attendance in light of departmental needs.
