Subject: Public seminar - Mapematics - A New Approach in Multi-criteria Analysis

    Industrial Engineering Winter Seminar Series

Date and Time: April 20 at 12:30 p.m.
Location: Morroy Building MA310, 5269 Morris St.

(Coffee and Cookies will be available)

    SPEAKER: Dr. Hilario C. Lamotte

TITLE: Mapematics - A New Approach in Multi-criteria Analysis

The combination of mapping and algebra transforms Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into a robust tool for multi-criteria analysis. This paper explains the theory and presents some case studies of its use in Marine GIS in Atlantic Canada. A case study illustrates one of the issues related to where to apply a limited budget to marine research. This is not a simple question and it depends on different criteria including fisheries science and management concerns, marine environmental criteria, and maritime traffic density among others. In different situations, GIS has been presented as a magic tool providing solutions to challenging spatial problems, and this is exemplified when the combination of multiple alternatives demonstrates the potential for GIS to contribute to spatial analyses for marine science and management decision-making processes.
