Creating a cultural shift: Engineers as writers

Sponsored by: The Writing Centre and the Centre for Learning and Teaching's Certificate Program

Speaker: Sarah Jane Payne, PhD Candidate in Civil Engineering

    Time: April 5th – 10:00-11:30

Location: Room 2616 of the Killam Library

Writing is a fundamental activity in the engineering profession; however, engineering students often do not see the value in writing activities. Writing is viewed as peripheral to their engineering education.

This presentation will focus on identifying the underlying causes of dismissive attitudes among engineers towards writing and will review several successful intervention strategies implemented at other engineering schools that have helped foster a culture of writing amongst engineering students. This session will also cover several writing activities that have been developed for the Dalhousie Writing Centre. These writing activities can be integrated into engineering writing projects and can help address some of the fundamental grammatical and structural issues that plague novice writers.

Sarah Jane Payne is a PhD candidate in Civil and Resource engineering at Dalhousie University. Since 2006 she has worked at the Dalhousie Writing Centre as a writing tutor. In this capacity she has helped both undergraduate and graduate students, mostly engineers, to improve the written component of projects such as lab reports, co-op reports, literature reviews, journal articles and graduate theses.  She has also presented to both undergraduate and graduate student classes on various writing topics such as paragraph construction, grammar, formatting engineering reports, and preparing journal articles.

This presentation has been prepared as part of Sarah Jane’s independent study project for the Certificate in University Teaching and Learning from the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Dalhousie University.
