A sold-out crowd gathered at the Westin Nova Scotia Tuesday night to suppor the Dal Tigers and celebrate the newest inductees to the Tigers Sport Hall of Fame.
Attendees hid generously on silent and live auction items, helping the Tigers generate valuable funds for their teams. Following a delicious three-course dinner, event MC Ken Reid of Sportsnet Central introduced this year's class of inductees.
The honourees included basketball player and current women's head coach Anna (Pendergast) Stammberger, who played 10 years on Canada's national team and 15 seasons of semi-professional basketball in Germany after five years with the Tigers. Brothers Paul and Eric Villeneuve were both members of the men's volleyball team in the early 1990s. Between them, they have four CIAU (CIS) medals, three CIAU (CIS) second team all-Canadian selections, 10 AUAA (AUS) titles, six AUAA (AUS) all-star nods, four Tigers volleyball team MVPs and two Dalhousie rookie of the year awards.
Dalhousie grad and former Tigers swimmer Bette El-Hawary received the Sandy Young Award, which recognizes an individual for their outstanding contribution to Nova Scotia sports. It was conceived by the late Dr. Sandy Young, a professor of sport history in the School of Health and Human Performance.
