Tigers Weekend Recap Jan 19 579x350

Men’s Basketball

The Tigers grabbed four big points on Tuesday in their 72-48 victory over the StFX X-Men. Five Tigers were in double digits in scoring including Sven Stammberger who had 19 points and added five rebounds. Jarred Reid added 17 of his own and six rebounds and Kashrell Lawrence had a team-high eight boards and chipped in 12 points.

On Saturday, the Tigers were in Fredericton to take on the UNB Varsity Reds. After finishing the first quarter tied at 20, the Varsity Reds started pounding the injury-ridden Tigers, who were outscored by a combined 41 points over the next three quarters as they went on to lose 57-98 to drop to 6-4 on the season.

Kashrell Lawrence and Jarred Reid led the Tigers in the loss with 11 points apiece, while Ritchie Kanza Mata had a team-high 11 assists. The Tigers got outmuscled on the boards all game long, and they were outrebounded 45-27 in the game, as they were without big men Devon Stedman, Jonathan Kamba and Sven Stammberger.

The Tigers are now in a three-way tie for first in the AUS after the loss to the UNB Varsity Reds this weekend.

The Tigers will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on the last-place Memorial Sea-Hawks in the first game of a two-game set on Saturday night at 8:00pm.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s team also won a big four-point game last Tuesday, defeating the visiting StFX X-Women 68-52.

Courtney Thompson had another big game, scoring 18 points, moving her career points total over the 1200 mark. Kristy Moore and Robbi Daley were also in double digits, adding 12 and 11 points apiece, respectively.

After Saturday night’s game in Fredericton, the Tigers have now won four of their last five games after defeating the UNB Varsity Reds 68-56. The Tigers put on a clinical performance and were hot out of the gate, outscoring the Varsity Reds 22-8 after the first quarter.

The Tigers compensated for a rough night on the boards with a strong defense and pinpoint passing. They forced UNB into 28 assists on the night and they capitalized, scoring 33 (basically half) of their points off turnovers.

Tessa Stammberger led the Tigers with a 20 point, seven rebound and four steal effort while AUS leading scorer Courtney Thompson dropped a team-high 22 points in the win.

The Tigers will look to keep rolling when they face the Memorial Sea-Hawks this weekend in a two-game set at the Dalplex. The first game will get underway at 6:00pm on Saturday night. Be sure to join us as we raise awareness of mental health in our Make Some Noise initiative.

Men’s Hockey

The Tigers have already officially doubled last year’s win total after picking up a victory against the UPEI Panthers at home on Friday night.  Tanner Williams scored four minutes into the first period to get things going for the Tigers, and JP Harvey scored his sixth goal of the season early in the third to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. The Panthers would end up tacking one on late, but Corbin Boes’ 37 saves helped the Tigers hold on for a 2-1 victory, their sixth of the season.

They couldn’t keep the momentum in their favour the next night when they faced the last-place St. Thomas Tommies at home.  After the two teams traded goals in the first to make it a 1-1 game after the first intermission, the Tommies poured in four goals in the second frame. They’d add two more in the third period to widen the margin and the Tigers couldn’t respond as they went down 6-2.

The Tigers will face a steep challenge on Friday when they face the first-place UNB Varsity Reds. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm at the Halifax Forum.

Women’s Hockey

The Tigers had three games this past week, starting with a 3-2 win over the visiting Mount A Mounties. The Mounties scored the first goal of the game, but three consecutive goals, from three different Tigers sealed the victory for the Tigers. Marita Alfieri got things started for the Tigers in the first, followed by a goal from Lisa MacLean midway through the first. Alyssa Palmer-Dixon scored the game winner early in the second. Jessica Severeyns allowed just one more goal in the third, sealing the victory for Tigers.

They got off to a rough start this weekend when they lost 5-0 on the road Saturday to the UPEI Panthers. They were undisciplined and the Panthers took advantage, executing on three of their five power play opportunities on the night. Jessica Severeyns made 24 saves on 29 shots in the loss for the Tigers.

The next day they faced the second-place University of Moncton Aigles Bleues. After getting down 3-0 in the first 13 minutes, goaltender Jeanne Morin was pulled in favour of Severeyns, who looked to bounce back after a disappointing performance the night before. She did all of that and more, as her 30 save performance propelled a Tigers comeback.

Marita Alfieri, Sarah Robichaud and Lisa MacLean all scored for the Tigers as they clawed back to tie the game at three goals apiece early in the third period.  Moncton responded a few minutes later with a goal to regain their lead, but Jesse Rietveld responded just 13 seconds later on the rush to knot the game back at four. Neither team could find the back of the net in the dying minutes of regulation, and overtime was scoreless so the two teams headed to a shootout.

In the shootout, both teams went scoreless until Alfieri snuck one past the goalie to give the Tigers the advantage. Moncton could not respond and the Tigers came away with the thrilling shootout victory.

The Tigers will look to make it a sweep of Moncton when they play the second half of a home-and-home on Saturday at 2:00pm.

Men’s Volleyball

The Tigers went 3-0 in their third and final AUS-RSEQ Interlock of the 2014-15 season and have secured a first place finish in the AUS.

Friday night’s match saw the Tigers take on the Montreal Carabins. Montreal squeaked out a 26-24 win in the first set, but it was all Tigers after that. Bryan Duquette had a game-high 20 kills and added 12 digs for 24.5 points, leading the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Carabins.

In the first of two matches on Saturday, the Tigers faced the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. The Tigers were in control early on, taking the first two sets 25-13 and 25-19. The Vert et Or bounced back in the third set, pushing the Tigers to extra points, but they didn’t push hard enough and the Tigers ended the match with a 28-26 win in the third and final set. Duquette was hot again for the Tigers, scoring 15 kills and nine digs.

Saturday night was a big night in Quebec as the Tigers faced the host Laval Rouge et Or. The Rouge et Or handed the Tigers their only loss of the regular season in the fall, but would not be able to do it again. In a true team effort, the Tigers had a balanced attack, defeating the hosts 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21). Kristen O’Brien had 10 kills, while Matthew Donovan added six blocks.

Setter Jonathan McDonald had a great weekend with 117 assists and 24 digs.

The Tigers head to Newfoundland this weekend and will be back at home to host UNB January 30 and 31 in their last games of the regular season.

Women’s Volleyball

After a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-13) romp of the Cape Breton Capers on Sunday, the Tigers are now in third place in AUS standings with just five matches left in the regular season.

Abby Czenze led the attack in Cape Breton, grabbing 26 assists and added four service aces. First-year Mieke Dumont had nine kills and collected 12 digs for a total of 10.0 points in the match that saw the Tigers hand Cape Breton their 11th loss of the season.

The women’s team also heads to Newfoundland this weekend and is back at home the following weekend, hosting Moncton and UNB.
