Women’s Soccer, 1-0-1
Despite holding an early lead and dominating play for most of the game on Friday, the Tigers couldn’t manage to snap Acadia’s season-long unbeaten streak when the Axewomen tied the game in the 87th minute. First-year Jensen Hudder scored her first AUS career goal in the 34th minute to give Dal the lead. The Tigers had one of their best games of the season against an unbeaten Acadia squad.
On Saturday, the Tigers hosted the UPEI Panthers, and this time their hard work and strong play resulted in a win. Victoria Parkinson gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute and they never looked back, controlling play and keeping the ball in the Panther’s half for most of the game. Michelle Yates notched her seventh goal of the year in the 83rd minute to extend their lead to 2-0. The Tigers now sit fourth in the AUS with a 6-3-2 record. They host StFX and Memorial next weekend to wrap up their regular season before they get ready to host the 2014 Subway AUS Championship.
Men’s Soccer, 0-0-2
The men’s soccer team couldn’t manage to record a win this weekend despite two quality performances. On Friday they were in Wolfville taking on the Acadia Axemen and the two teams played to a scoreless draw. The Tigers received three yellow cards in the match and Jason Ross made seven saves for the shutout.
On Saturday, the Tigers hosted the UPEI Panthers at Wickwire Field. The Tigers took a lead going into halftime when Tyler Lewars fired his first of the year through a crowd to beat a sprawling Axemen keeper to make the game 1-0. It was a tough, gritty affair with yellow cards being handed out to both sides, and Tigers defender Ryan Lewars was sent off when he received his second yellow of the game. The Panthers tied it up in the 60th minute and despite being down a man for the final 25 minutes, the Tigers held off a late charge by the Panthers and settled for the 1-1 draw.
The Tigers will wrap things up with a two-game home stand next weekend against the StFX X-Men and the Memorial Sea-Hawks. They now sit in sixth place in the AUS with a 3-4-4 record, though they will need to move up into one of the top five seeds to make the playoffs.
Men’s Hockey, 0-2-0
The Tigers were on a two-game road trip this weekend facing UNB on Friday and UdeM on Saturday. On Friday, Pierre Vandall and Mike Evelyn scored for the Tigers in the first period to make the game 2-2. The UNB Varsity Reds scored four unanswered goals in the second period to make it a 6-2 game heading into the final frame. JP Harvey added another for the Tigers to make it 6-3, but that was as close as the Tigers would get as the Varsity Reds came out on top. Wendell Vye made 36 saves in the loss for the Tigers.
On Saturday, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period off of goals from Fabian Walsh and Mitch O’Neill, but Moncton would score two goals in the second to tie it at two apiece. They added another early in the third period, and with Corbin Boes pulled from his net, the Aigles Bleus fired one in the empty net to hand the Tigers a 4-2 loss, dropping them to 0-3 on the season.
The Tigers will be back in action Wednesday when they take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday at 7:00pm.
Women’s Hockey, 1-1-0
Elizabeth MacArthur had two goals and Maggie Beaton, Courtney Sheedy and Jesse Reitveld each added a tally as the Tigers rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit to beat the Mount Allison Mounties 5-2 in their season opener. Jeanne Morin had 22 saves in the win for the Tigers, who won their season opener for just the second time in the last five years.
On Saturday, the Tigers faced the St. Thomas Tommies in their home opener. Down 3-1 in the third period, Elizabeth MacArthur notched her second of the game and Maggie Beaton added one of her own just minutes later to tie the game at three with eight minutes left to play. The tie would be short-lived as the Tommies scored just two minutes later to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, winning4-3. Mati Barrett made 26 saves in the loss for the Tigers.
They’ll be back on the ice on Wednesday when they head down the street to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 7:00pm.
Women’s Swimming
The Tigers were in Wolfville this weekend competing in the Jack Scholz AUS Invitational, their first meet of the season. They put away the competition with ease, finishing with 278.5 points, over 100 points more than their closest competitor.

The men’s team was also in Wolfville this weekend for the Jack Scholz AUS Invitational, and they also won handily with a commanding 305 points performance, 50 points better than second-place Acadia.

Women’s Volleyball
The Tigers just couldn’t get things going Friday night when they faced the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec on Friday night as they lost 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-20). Anna Dunn-Suen, who’s had a great pre-season for the Tigers so far, led the way with eight kills, while libero Marisa Mota added eight digs in the loss.
On Saturday, the Tigers played a better match but still fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-23 to the Rouge et Or. Jessica Josenhans led the Tigers with six kills and five blocks while Abby Czenze added 11 digs.
The Tigers head to Montreal for the AUS-RSEQ Interlock this weekend.
Women’s Basketball 2-1-0
The Tigers went 2-1 over the course of the Subway Centennial Women’s Basketball Tournament hosted at the Dalplex. The women’s team opened up the tournament with a 63-43 win over the UBC- Okanagan Heat. Rebecca Nuttall led the way with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist. Veteran guard, Courtney Thompson added 12 points in the opening night victory.
The only loss of the weekend for the ladies came on Saturday night, when they fell short to Laval 56-54. Courtney Thompson, Rebecca Nuttall and Tessa Stammberger were the top scorers for the Tigers with 14, 13, and 11 points respectively. During the half, there was a special presentation honouring former Tigers who wore the number 10. Current number 10, Tessa Stammberger presented Leslie Duncan, Janice King and Anne Lindsay with a gift from head coach Anna Stammberger and her team.
To wrap the tournament up, the Tigers cruised to a 65-32 win over the York Lions on Sunday afternoon. The team showed their depth with nine players recording points. The bench accounted for 37 of the team’s 65 points in the Sunday afternoon victory.
The basketball teams travel to Maine next weekend for two exhibition games.
