Fall is in the air, and Tiger pride is on the prowl.

This weekend is Homecoming, Dal’s annual “welcome back” celebration which brings hundreds of alumni across the universities 12 faculties to campus for a series of events — many of which are open to broader Dal community as well. Starting with Thursday night’s Alumni Dinner, and through to Saturday night’s closing football game, alumni will be reconnecting with old friends, familiar places and Tiger spirit.

Interested in taking part? Here’s a look at just some of what’s happening over the next three days.

All-alumni events


Thursday


The Dalhousie Alumni Dinner: A chance to join friends, professors and former classmates and celebrate over dinner. This year’s dinner will be hosted by Jane Taber, Atlantic bureau chief of the Globe and Mail, and will feature the presentation of this year’s Alumni Association Awards. (Look for more details on the awards later this week on Dal News.) Individual tickets are $65.

President’s Reunion Class Social: Alumni will celebrate the anniversary of their graduating class. All are welcome.

Tiger Fun Run/Walk: Get moving with your fellow Tigers during this free event, open to the entire Dal community. Register today!
8 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. run/walk

Dalhousie Alumni Association 2014 Lobster Tailgate Party: Enjoy a lobster roll, hamburger or sausage before the big football game. Beer will be available in the adjoining Tiger’s “Ambush” beer garden. Tickets are $10 for a lobster roll, or $5 for a hamburger or sausage, and available at the gate.

Tigers Football: Put on your black and gold, head down to Wickwire Field and root for the Tigers as they take on Holland College. Tickets for the game are $5 and available at the gate.

Dalhousie Transportation Collaboratory Showcase (Engineering): Come celebrate the work of the Dalhousie Transportation Collaboratory (DalTRAC)! With guest speakers and seminars.

Brewing up Civilization: The History, Culture and Science of Beer (Arts and Social Sciences + Science): Come join us for this free, engaging lecture featuring Dr. Gordon McOuat (University of King’s College). (Pre-reception at 3 p.m.)

Celebrating Science Outreach: The Faculty of Science offers a variety of fun and interactive educational outreach programs to get our community excited about science. Join us to celebrate the positive impact these programs have on Nova Scotia’s students and teachers!

J.D. McLean Lecture Series (Dentistry): This year’s lecture features Dr. Ivar Mendez, former head of neurosurgery at Dalhousie and currently chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Saskatchewan and the unified head of surgery of the Province of Saskatchewan. His lecture is titled: “Art, Nutrition, Dental Care & Robotics: A Strategy to Fighting Poverty.”

Back to class with a favourite prof (Law): Enjoy an interesting lecture without the stress of looming exams and papers, with Professor Rollie Thompson.

Computer Science Lecture: Stan Matwin, director of Dal’s Institute for Big Data, will present a free lecture titled “Big Data: Opportunities and Challenges.”

A celebration of 40 years in Canadian Studies (Arts and Social Sciences): Come early for Beavertails (3 p.m.) ahead of the “Brewing up Civilization: The History, Culture and Science of Beer” lecture, and stick around afterwards at a (Canadian) beer and (Canadian) cheese-themed reception.

Medical Alumni Awards Dinner: Join the Dalhousie Medical Alumni Association at the 56th Annual Awards Gala & Recognition Dinner. We welcome all Dalhousie medical alumni to recognize the exemplary contributions to medicine of our 2014 award recipients.

Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, 1055 Marginal Road


A Toast to the Coast (Management): The Faculty of Management alumni are hosting the 10th annual A Toast to the Coast, a charity event in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The event will be held at Atlantica Hotel in Halifax and features a full course meal, as well as live and silent auctions. In the past 9 years this ticketed event has raised over $60,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Athletics and Black & Gold Club Events


Homecoming features several athletic events in addition to the Football Club game: a women’s basketball tournament all weekend at Dalplex, and women’s and men’s soccer showdowns against UPEI on Wickwire Field Saturday afternoon. Visit the Homecoming website for more details.

Faculty of Agriculture Homecoming


This year, the Faculty of Agriculture is having its Homecoming in Truro simultaneously with Homecoming on the Halifax campuses. Alumni are able to sit in on a current class, watch this year’s College Royal festivities on Saturday, take part in “Rocky’s Run” and witness alumni games in both basketball and soccer.
